echoes of OK Computer
O SNAP
Not knowing whether this contest would be close at the end, I purposefully tried to keep my eyes averted from all round 7 entries, and I asked a volunteer to grab them, mix them up and send them to me, so this round is presented with absolutely no bias (I donāt believe I had any bias towards Cassette or Louis prior to this, but this is a nice just in case option.)
So with that, like I said, you guys brought it hard for the final round, and I appreciate it. Through my crappy last couple of days, I have been enjoying some 70ās funk, soul, rock, and punk and I am ready to get my reveal on.
Also, quick update, though I did not get the job I was looking for, I did get a very nice note from the hiring manager explaining that I gave a fantastic interview, that I have a strong future in management, and that had I not run into a buzzsaw with a killer pedigree, the job would have been mine. Unfortunately, its hard to compare 3 years of management to someone with over 15.
Keep the head up, keep plugging away.
Now lets get funky.
I got a hunch the olā jalfrez bags this category
Yes! I am currently riding in the RV, heading for 3 days in Vegas before going skiing, and this will be a great distraction. There is a shit ton of traffic
I havenāt interviewed for a management job in years, but the feedback you got makes me think that youāll find something sooner rather than later. Also, it sounds like you might have options at that company if anything else opens up.
So this may be sacrilege, but I learned something about myself when doing this category.
The Walrus you searched for ⦠was in front of you all along?
I donāt think that James Brown is all that great.
In 15th Place - Scoring 1 - King of NY - Hot Pants by James Brown
In 14th Place - Scoring 2 - Jalferezi - Get on the Good Foot Pts 1 and 2 by James Brown
I honestly didnāt know that going into this, but manā¦
I just couldnāt get into these. Iāve been playing these songs on loop for the last couple days, and each time these came on I just wanted to hit the skip button. They are VERY repetitive, which isnāt always bad (I love Daft Punk) but I was getting tired of the samey horn section as well near the end.
Sorry guys, somebody has to be last, somehow its the godfather of soul.
loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
In 13th place, scoring 3 - Pauwl - Out of the Blue by Roxy Music
Warning, NSFW thumbnail
I actually kind of liked this, I at the least kinda liked all of these outside of the JB songs. Unfortunately, this one was just a little too slow, and for a 70ās song specifically I was looking for something super upbeat and funky.
Is this because of JB or the Jalferezi curse?
jalfrez. He and I are boys, but we have a little rivalry. I take pleasure in him failing
Not as weird a take as you might think.
So I really really really didnāt know where to place this next song, but I think this is right.
Our leader goes down early.
In 12th place, scoring 4 - LouisCypher - Rock N Roll N** by Patti Smith**
Warning, the N word is censored above for a reason. It is used frequently throughout the song.
I get what Louis was going for here, and I am going to include some additional information he provided here.
"The use of the N-word is obviously offensive but that is kind of the point here. Itās not intended as a slur. Reasonable people can disagree if it is appropriate. I see it as in the tradition of John Lennonās Woman is the Nigger of the World.
Apart from that itās a raw kick ass rock song. Probably best to be on the safe side and do not sing along in the office."
I get it, and am not 100% against the use of the word in the way it is in the song.
That being said, as a fan of powerful chick rock as has been seen so far in this reveal, I just really didnāt get into this one musically. I canāt quite put my finger on why, and maybe it is bias of the word itself, but comparing it to some of my favorite 70ās women led rock, I would put it closer to the bottom.
Really? Iāve always thought he was a pretty consensus choice for great musician.
And with that, weāve got a ballgame folks. This is no runaway.
A certain somebody is going to find where I live and personally crucify me for this next one.
In 11th place, Scoring 5 - 6ix - Move on Up by Curtis Mayfield
Especially when I tell you the reasonā¦
Its too long man, Like 4 minutes too long.
I looked up the non extended version on youtube and loved it. Its the perfect length. This is a 3 minute song, not a 9 minute epic. I gotta score on the total merits man, sorry.
Another one bites the dust.
In 10th place, scoring 6 - Cassette - I wanna Be Sedated by The Ramones
I like this song. I like it a lot. Who doesnāt?
On repeat visits I was just not getting into it though. Maybe because Iāve heard it so many times in my life? If there is one thing I can say about this category, is that outside of this song, you all really went pretty deep into the vault to grab some stuff that may not have been real hit singles.
So, nothing against The Ramones or Cassetteās choice here, it just didnāt beat out whats coming up.
Gonna take a short 5-10. Ill be back. Talk amongst yourselves. Iām sure 6ix has destroyed his computer in a rage, so we are probably done hearing from him tonight.
