this happens routinely in southern lebanon/syria and northern Israel. It doesn’t involve Hiroshima like explosion on the port of Beirut for no apparent reason.
I know people are talking about fireworks being part of it and you can see the small explosions. But smaller munitions would also look like that going off as well.
Pretty devastating, pretty crazy.
I had a roommate in 1990 that would spend $1000 up at the Indian reservation every 4th of July on tennis ball bombs, mortars, rockets, you name it. He disassembled some and put them into a more sturdy and much larger fused container. Results were terrifying and he never did it again. Next day we were hanging out at his parents house a few blocks from where the detonation occurred (maybe 1000 feet as the crow flies) and his step-dad started chatting us up at the dining room table. “So what’d you guys do last night?” “Not much, hung out at Denny’s, drove around, set off a…” He stopped us there and let us know that every window in his house rattled, the chandelier swayed back and forth slightly, and that the authorities wouldn’t know what to do with us if they ever found us, but we wouldn’t like whatever they finally decided on. This was 1986-87. I was standing on the other side of a hill ~200 feet from where it went off. Getting hit with the shock wave was unexpected and scary and it wasn’t very big. Maybe about a pound or a bit less.
You’re a rabid antiyosemite.
I regret my past certainty this was an industrial accident. I should allow for the possibility that the blast was due to munitions.
Time to send in the United States Marine Corps!
Maybe the Army, but I’m quite sure the Marines are 100% done with Beirut.
Starting to look like there will be massive casualties.
The video that showed buildings getting vaporized and the larger ones getting their roofs and walls blown off makes it seem like nobody within a half mile of the blast will be alive. Unfortunately it looks like a densely populated area. Hoping for the best but prepared to hear that there were no survivors anywhere near there.
Yea there’s no way only 50 people died. I’d be surprised if it’s less than 1,000.
How about an absolute shit ton of food, water, medical supplies and heartfelt well wishes?
I’m attempting to donate to Impact Lebanon’s Disaster Relief Fund, but there’s so much traffic to the page I can’t get the donation page to load. Just when you lose faith in humanity…
Here’s the link, hopefully it’s working later.
I don’t mean to downplay this at all, but sometimes the truth is amusing.

What if they use Trump math, if no one counts them then they never died!
Well, if i was his P.I., he ain’t getting paid for today
Would have won my imagined bet of over 1kt.
I did my own before and after thanks to Google Street View about a half mile away.
Really, unless he screwed up something that I didn’t notice, I’d give him a pat on the back for thinking to replicate the famous analysis of the Trinity test photo where they accidentally published the super duper top secret yield numbers from the first nuclear bomb.
