Here I saw the headline and was thinking it was about an American trying to enter and I was proud for a moment about the border agent

I originally misread it as someone spraying pro-Nazi graffiti on a war memorial. Now, though…

Probably too hot now, but I will be taking a pickaxe and sledgehammer to that at night sometime in the next 5 years if I remember to when the heat and focus dies down.

Everything’s cool now. They’ve decided that it’s only vandalism that was done to a literal Nazi monument that not only exists, but apparently is just one of several in Canada.

Read this a few days ago about fascist Ukrainians in Canada

It doesn’t surprise me in the least that that’s in Etobicoke. A wretched hive of scum and villainy.

That would be creepy shit even if it had nothing to do with Nazis.

But Etobicoke gave us the Ford family. Quite the gift.

Yeah also a little worrisome that these kids are receiving weapons training at their cultural center filled with pictures of fascists

I will not stand for this anti Etobicoke slander

Look, Etobicoke is not sending Toronto its finest politicians. They’re sending us drug dealers and crack users. And some, I assume, are good people.

There are definitely Ukrainians that fought for the Nazis. There are definitely Ukrainians that fought for the communists. Both of those groups did horrible things to Ukrainians. I wouldn’t want to choose between Hitler or the holodomor genocide. Neighbourhoods got split up when people picked sides.

Ukrainians still get accused of being Nazis when Russia needs a pretense to steal more of their land to “protect” Jews and Russian expats. It’s a particularly sore subject for modern Ukrainians that live there. This is such a nuanced issue but err yeah, take all of the statues down who cares. I’d stil be wary of how much influence Russia has on this news story, much like they did when they brought up all those “Canadian Ukrainian Nazis” a couple years ago. Russia only cares about jews when it’s politically useful.

My one grandfather was the son of Ukrainian immigrants born out West and moved to Etobicoke shortly after WWII, was heavily involved in the Ukrainian community and was extremely racist against Italians and Germans because of the war (obviously not a good thing, but clearly anti fascist)I assume the vast majority of Ukrainians in Etobicoke are anti facist.

The first domino has fallen…how many to follow, I wonder?

Freeland stepping in. I don’t agree with all her political views (she’s very centrist) but she’s competent. I would be much, much happier with her as PM and that’s the track she’s on.

She’s Trudeau’s fixer at this point, she should be PM, finance minister, minister of foreign affairs, and Governor General. I would vote for her over Peter Mackay easily and probably anyone else at this point.

I am not sure it will be McKay, it just seems odd to go for the lukewarm centrist in this environment. Erin the tool seems to be chasing the reactive conservative base and I think it might work. Ontario elected Doug Ford and I think that’s what the conservatives will try to replicate. Andrew Scheer’s faux populism didn’t work.

To be fair, Scheer was an absolutely terrible politician.

He was good at the behind the scenes stuff, like influence peddling and calling in favors strategically. But Smug Phony Dork is not a very appealing retail politics persona.
