She was against fighting a war against Iraq overseas and she’s against fighting a war against Republicans domestically. Maybe she is just too consistently not willing to fight.
Depends on how much they’ll give her for carrying super hard right now when it counts. Maybe she doesn’t like working that hard and is taking the laziest line possible.
Well, smart people can be dumb…I know second hand that Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign people were all super duper geniuses (maybe they were smart if they were aiming for VP the whole time), but also when you tell someone who isn’t that smart something that’s correct, even if you do a really good job of explaining it, a lot of the time they think you’re wrong and listen to whoever says what they want to hear.
You really expect them to keep promises of keeping her employed for 15 plus years? Like what kind of promises do you expect her to get that is better than staying a senator for who knows how long. She could be one into her 80s lol.
Also what job in this country is easier than being a Congress person? I doubt being a lobbyist. Plus way less power. You got a whole team of people doing your job plus like half the year in vacation
Yeah that’s what I was saying by being arrogant. Similar to Trumpers. Dumb as shit but arrogant/egotistical.
I think that’s likely the winner for cinema.
I hope she gets primaried but honestly won’t matter I don’t see a democrat winning az with their new voting laws. Going to cut into the poor Hispanic vote massively
There is no way a bunch of billionaires don’t keep their word to the politician who sacrificed her career on their altar. It’s basically free and screwing her would make someone else doing it very unlikely.
Yes, the business community will 100% make her life super cushy as a positive example for the next batch of politicians they want to legally bribe. It’s not even a rounding error in their budget to do that for her. Just living in DC and being casual acquaintances w/ some people in politics and lobbying, I’m 110% sure that is how it works.
Lobbying is a former person who worked in politics being handed a cushy life and then they go tell the politicians currently in power, and their staffers, that this could be yours too if you play ball. That’s it, that is the job.
Meh they have tons and tons, endless really, Congress people who have done them tons and tons of favors over decently long careers. Longer your career the more valuable to them. They aren’t dumb, cinema might be the loudest but there are plenty of senators preventing anything they don’t want, she’s just the lightening rod.
If she wanted value she would be trying to stick around and rack up favors. A one term senator isn’t worth much. They want people sticking around playing ball for decades.
What exactly has she done for them? All she has really done is bring attention to herself. It’s not like if we replaced her with another Bernie there is a bit change in how democrats legislate. Only rubes think it’s just her.
She’s acting as the lightning rod when it’s going to really cost her. They’ll hook her up to set the precedent. I really can’t express how cheap it is for them to pay her off. Give her a 4-5MM a year job on K street until she’s dead, that’s literally nothing next to what the Democrats policy goals getting shifted in their favor this cycle is worth.
Pretty much anything. Senators only get paid 174K per year. And they can’t even insider trade any longer (at least in theory). I guess I don’t have a handle on how much grifting they can do while in office. Most of the really wealthy ones were wealthy before they got there.
Bernie is an 80-year-old, he has been more or less working the whole time, and during much of that time he had a six figure income. With sensible saving and investing, any such person can easily be worth several million.
Also, IIRC, his books really contributed to his wealth. Are we counting that as grift? What other specific grifting activities did he engage in?
And the whole Bernie owning 3 houses is a thing that conservatives I know bring up to both sides Democrats being just as corrupt as anyone on the right, no matter what that offense is, and they 100% believe it
His net worth is about $2M, which is about the same as every 80 year old in the US* who has had a decent paying job for a long time with benefits who has consistently owned a home.
That may not be fair, but it’s a pretty loose definition of “grift”.
eta: * anywhere that RE prices are high anyway, which is a lot of places
I’m still waiting for Chads to clarify, but writing books can be legitimate grift. The usual recipe is to basically pump out some ghost-written trash and have some deal in place for various entities (normally non-profit) to buy large quantities of it that they can give away or whatever (but ultimately no one ever reads them). People on the right do this all the time as a way of transferring charitable contributions into their pockets. I don’t think that is what Bernie did. I haven’t checked, though.
How he and Jane got their money is a long story which makes sense because he’s old. Started with buying a house in 1983 for $50k. A big factor was Jane got a $200000 severance package from Burlington College.
