We already knew voting rights was dead for awhile.

It’s gg democracy

Its not. You can do both, but the fact that that question is coming up proves SDs point

The sweet summer child in me still thinks there’s a tiny tiny chance that part of the dems’ strategy (lol dems and strategy in the same sentence) is to wait for even shittier state laws to pass and for some of the dumbest red state officials to just start openly crowing about how they plan to never certify a Democratic winner again, then use that as cover, where Manchin et al can say “look guys we had to kill the filibuster because this shit was getting ridiculous”.

But yeah it’s probably gg democracy.

F’in moderate democrats

If the infrastructure bill were to pass the House first, on the other hand, they could threaten to take their ball and go home if the House doesn’t give them absolutely everything they want.

Notably, the moderate House Democrats have been loading up the reconciliation bill with a series of conflicting demands. On the one hand, they have been complaining about its overall size and pushing to shrink down the headline number. On the other hand, they have been making their own costly demands. Josh Gottheimer, one letter signer, has been crusading for a restoration of the state and local tax deduction, a benefit for some of his affluent constituents. Jim Costa, another signer, wants to protect the heirs to massive fortunes from any taxation on their windfall.

These demands, notably, are not designed to protect the Democratic Party from the left’s unpopular baggage. Most of the broader debate has focused on the toxic brand damage of slogans like defunding the police and Green New Deal, but the moderate Democrats are, in this case, threatening to tank a highly popular agenda of taxing the very rich in order to give broad middle-class benefits. The moderate Democrats are the biggest obstacle to making the math work, simultaneously complaining about the size of the bill while ordering more expensive goodies for themselves.

Meh they won’t actually tank it they’re negotiating on getting some shit they want. Ranking this bill is career suicide. 99% would rather stay in Congress and keep building favors lobbyists owe them

Primary motivation of almost everyone in Congress (or power generally).

(Are people still pretending Joe Biden is going to step aside for his second term or has that already gone down the memory hole and anyone who suggested it is denying they ever had that thought?)

Only one who confuses me is cinema because she’s clearly doing stuff that will hurt her re election chances and it’s reflected in the polling and she stays on course.

And the fact she isn’t trying to fight for voting rights when her state is implementing some of the worst. I really can’t see her beating a republican with these new laws and losing plenty of dem support.

Really can’t make sense of it other than some kinda promise from a billionaire or something but even that doesn’t make sense

Maybe she acts the way she does due to (misguided) principles. There may be no way to get her to change by appealing to her electoral self-interest because she is willing to go down for what she truly believes.

You just have to be willing to accept that someone can vote the way she does because that’s what they truly believe.

Or she might not be very smart,

Nah, man. These people have no beliefs. Power and money. That is all they want. Whatever beliefs provide the least resistance in their chosen path are the beliefs they will have.

You think Obama and Hilary were always against gay marriage and magically had epiphanies about it later in life?

Sinema started out with the Green Party. I believe that people who affiliate themselves with third parties like the Greens and Libertarians are disproportionately principled whack jobs.

I actually do believe that most politicians think they are acting in the country’s best interest. They just happen to think that their re-election is in the country’s best interest and will make compromises to get votes.

It would be a different story if she stayed Green.

Maybe she’s a secret Putin tool.

She went from green, to progressive democrat when running and campaigning, to being on the right of manchin.

Last thing she is is principled. Her ideology changes every year lol.

I agree her being super dumb makes the most sense but still she’s got a ton of advisers so that doesn’t make a ton of sense either. Maybe a combo of super stupid and massive ego/arrogant

Nah. Her being a careerist with a personality disorder makes the most sense. It’s crucially important to getting anything good done ever that we stop accepting people’s intentions at face value just because they agree with us. There are quite a few fake left wing people out there who are only in it for what they can personally get out of it and will sell us out for the first semi reasonable offer.

Everything she’s ever done makes sense if she’s moderately intelligent and for sale.
