Iām hoping the last recall was driven more by people wanting to vote for Ahnold and less by people caring about recalling a governor since it was pretty close but I guess now I have to sweat whether Cali GOAT or not.
The fact that Dianne Feinstein is one of their senators should help you answer this question.
5,000,000 of us voted for her opponent, we tried .
Gavin Newsome, Nancy Pelosi and their goons intentionally did this to us (by threatening any Ds who dared participate in the recall backup election).
what? There are several Dems on the ballot. But every intelligent and caring Democrat in the state knows what happened in 2003.
I know iāll get argued with, but as someone who actually has a bit of insider knowledge on this process and the inner workings of the party, let me address this.
No Democrat was EVER going to get an āendorsementā from the party or any other democratic elected, in CA or elsewhere. Gavin Newsom is the partyās endorsed candidate, and the only way to vote āforā him is to vote NO on question 1. He is not listed in question 2, and he is not eligible as a write-in.
in 2003, the LT Governor ran and that caused enough Dems to vote yes on recall that we got screwed. The party wasnāt organized and had terrible messaging (ldo), and failed to emphasize the no vote, especially since a high-profile dem was running āagainstā Gray Davis.
I know we all love to be counter culture here and we hate the establishment, but there is literally NO Democrat on the ballot that will ever get more votes than one of the leading republicans. I donāt care how bad Newsom is, Larry Elder is a crackpot and has a good chance of being elected with literally less than 20% of the vote (which would in reality be more like 10% or less of registered voters) due to the absolutely ridiculous and undemocratic recall rules. I cannot fathom why we havenāt pushed a state constitutional amendment to change them, but whatever.
Why canāt the D party just put all of its resources and messaging to get behind the least bad D in the recall election if Newsom gets recalled?
because we did that in 2003 and it failed, hard.
Literally, the messaging was, āNo on recall, but if yes, then vote Bustamonteā.
Less-engaged voters are already confused about the ballot. I have had to explain to many many voters via text and phones just how question 1 works. Adding the āif this, then thatā messaging is confusing and too complex for the average disengaged voter. The party has decided to go with the KISS principle because the other way has already failed before.
Why spend the money and messaging on what would essentially be a second, weaker endorsement? it may āfeelā right, but it makes no political sense.
Are you only allowed to vote for the replacement if you vote yes on recall?
No, you can vote no and then vote for a replacement if you want. It will only count if question 1 gets more than 50%, though.
California Dems had over a decade since 2003 to try and fix the recall method. Itās so dumb that lieutenant governor does not become governor.
I donāt know what happens if Newsom resigns or dies before the recall election.
Rockānāroll all night and party everday?
If Newsom quits tomorrow, the recall disappears and the (D) Lt. Gov becomes governor.
What if he quits the day before the election?
No, but many people donāt know this and the Newsom campaign / Ds seem to want to keep it a secret.
I could be wrong, but based on my research which consisted of consulting myself, people either REALLY hate Newsom or they donāt give much of a shit at all. But the latter people arenāt really thinking about what happens if Larry Elder is our next governor. Lord Jesus itās a fire.
If California ends up with a GOP governor who gets to replace Diane Feinstein it may just break my will to pay attention, or worse.
Lots of normally non political younger people hate Newsom because the closures and them losing their jobs.
