I don’t know what the person you’re responding to said. I just thought it was worthwhile to show the data.
There is a discussion to be had about extrapolating that 2% across the other generations, but I’m not sure cis dudes wouldn’t just embarrass ourselves, no matter how strongly we feel to be allies
Like I can see a lot of non-bigoted reasons to say that at the very least, extreme caution should be used with that kind of extrapolation. And at worst, it’s claiming to know people’s identity better than they themselves know
I already feel like I’m speaking on things I shouldn’t be as a cis man, though
If we talk about gay people and I make the disclaimer that this is not a comparison to trans people, I would say there’s a lot of fair reasons to hypothesize big variations among generations. There are more factors than genes alone at play here.
Do you think there are less than 1 million trans people in the US? How many do you think exist? NoMatterWho, who I assume you have blocked and is trolling away on a comment i made about that number earlier in the thread. All their posting is trolling on this topic. I’m simply pushing back and will admit it may be clumsy.
I truly don’t know how many trans people exist. Maybe they exploded suddenly for some reason in the current 18-29 age demographic. You aren’t wrong that as a cis (and also straight man) I probably shouldn’t be making many assumptions on that. That being said I am not just pulling that number out of nowhere. Yes I do think fucking over millions of people for being who they are isn’t worth whatever sports consequence people are talking about here.
I think that number is higher now, and will become even higher in the future as (hopefully) society becomes more tolerant, and more trans kids are encouraged to participate in their gender-identified sports.
I’m hopeful that girls sports will include a substantial percentage of trans girls in the next 10 years or so.
“name three of them” is kinda strange. I don’t think I am friends/family with three gay people. I can only name one family member I know (in-law’s cousin). Obviously anyone can name three gay people and three trans athletes.
Actual names? I highly doubt it. “The one who won that NCAA swimming thing” isn’t good enough. If we went on a diner safari, I doubt you would get a single person who could give you three.
In any event, it’s an own goal to try to minimize the impact trans athletes are having and, god willing, will have even more in the future, by disparagingly indicating there are very few and insignificant such that their names aren’t even well known.
It’s not disparaging to transgender people to note that there are not a lot in sports, because it’s not their fault. And demonstrating that “the trans athlete problem” is manufactured nonsense means you can shift the conversation to:
The many barriers that already limit trans sports participation (e.g., bullying, discrimination).
How GOP and media fixate on minority groups as a distraction from political/corporate corruption, income inequality, climate change, etc.
I agree that all barriers need to be removed and trans girls should be encouraged to participate in whatever activities they prefer, including and perhaps especially sports given the current discrimination.
Craziest thing was found that one of my high school classmates came out as trans.
She (well he at the time) was the 300+ pound blindside tackle of the football team. Just a beast of a person. Probably the most manly of the manly. Dwarfed everybody else on the team. Always wondered why didn’t make it to CFB and now I know.
The whole sports debate made me think of that. Seems to be happy but man there was zero sign of this for anybody when we were in high school. Guess it’s the ones you least expect…
