LOL Democrats - Tik Tok on the clock, but the party don't stop

my bad

Yeah, theyā€™ll be just fine in Gilead.

Thinking the 50th Senator being a Democrat or Republican in 2023 is going to make the difference whether we end up in Gilead or not is too preposterous to even respond to. Manchin and Sinema still part of the 50 with a Republican House, come on now.

Years ago my girlfriendā€™s bff announced she was going to Costa Rica for a few years.
She was a notoriously picky eater and my gf was concerned that sheā€™d starve. I told her if Heather gets hungry enough sheā€™ll eat a shit sandwich and be grateful for it. GFā€™s response:

Just so far today, on this board, weā€™ve seen not voting characterized as tacit support for both spousal abuse and the oppression of minorities generally.

they get off on it. itā€™s for the same reason that in my home game, a hedge fund dude with many multiples of my net worth per month in income could try to stiff me $20 on a $400 payout. they just get off on it.

Just so far today every day, weā€™ve seen voting for Republicans characterized as tacit support for both spousal abuse and the oppression of minorities generally.

And voting for Democrats who promise to fight against these things but donā€™t is somehow better? Itā€™s time to teach a lesson about counting on votes, and it looks like itā€™s going to have to be a hard lesson.

Not voting is, of course, not the same as voting for a Republican.

They do in fact fight against those things. The reason you think they donā€™t is they care about things you donā€™t, like the rule of law.

I can tell by all of Bidenā€™s strident efforts to do nothing, and in fact in some cases make things worse.

A hard lesson, but not for you. Youā€™ll be fine.

Wait wait wait. What happened to ā€œprogressives can win if we turn out the baseā€? I always assumed that meant voting, but have I been wrong this whole time? Turn out for what?

And if itā€™s a close race, then yes, not voting is the same as voting for a republican

Basic first grade math suggests otherwise.

You are passionate about this, and I wish you well, but no, Im not going to be guilted into supporting the failed enterprise known as the Democratic party. Sorry, not sorry.

PS: Politicians turn out the base by actually supporting and fighting for their priorities!

Say what you will about the right wing nutjobs, but they sure do get off their asses and organize when they get riled up. Like this story where they basically took over an entire state party because they were pissed off about some made up bullshit: https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/2022/07/24/grooming-sex-ed-nebraska-judith-reisman/.

On the left we more just stick our thumbs up our asses and bloviate on the internet (myself included tbf) and thatā€™s why we lose. They just want it more, simple as that.

my calculus in 2020 was that biden would come in and do the typical biden crappy shit heā€™s been doing, and that would trigger revolt within the party, and weā€™d see change. nothing even fucking close to that has happened.

on another note I donā€™t think itā€™s fair to say if youā€™re white and well off you dont have the right to sit out (not directed at who Iā€™m replying to).

Iā€™m seriously choosing not to have children because I think theyā€™d be drawing very live into real apocalypse scenarios. even on the abortion issue - I have two sisters that have had extremely dangerous pregnancies and they both live in florida, and oneā€™s married to a very religious dude. I donā€™t know what their beliefs are on birth control but Iā€™d guess that his at least arenā€™t super modern. it worries me greatly. as a chronically ill person I worry greatly about my access to quality healthcare anymore, let alone AFFORDABLE care. thereā€™s tons of stuff like that that we all have a very real reason to be extremely angry about.

and even then a lot of us have friends and family that are poc. i have blood relatives. itā€™s not fair anymore to say that.

I have historically been very politically active and blindly have voted D for over a decade. if i want to enact any kind of meaningful change other than this declining status quo, what avenues are there for me, really? Iā€™ve walked 20 miles in a day campaigning for harley fucking rouda. barf.

I donā€™t disagree with that but it is also a lack of an actual outlet to do anything as well. The GOP has been varying degrees of batshit insane doing the baseā€™s wishes since 1994 (at least). Getting out and voting for the GOP wackjobs has had meaningful real world results. The Dems on the other hand have not accomplished anything in most of our lifetimes. Blaming people for being fed up with it after 3-4 decades is some weird victim blaming shit imo.

In 2022 USA there probably isnā€™t any imo. skydiver would say (and she might be right) that running for local office is your best bet.

This is true but didnā€™t the insane base orchestrate it with the near nomination of St. Reagan in '76 followed by his actual nomination in '80? The wheels were off after that. I donā€™t blame anybody whoā€™s fed up with all the bullshit, and in the world today it would take a long time before the actual left could seize any measure of control of the party and by then weā€™re all dead from catastrophic climate change anyway so I totally get checking out and going into self preservation mode if you have the means. I vote but other than that I donā€™t do much so Iā€™m basically in that boat.

you absolutely have the right to choose to sit out.

Thing is, if you do, I may not have that right in the very near future.

Yeah, I take this argument personally. Because the message Iā€™m receiving from the ā€œI refuse to voteā€ folks is that not only do they not care about people like me, they may even want to actively oppress people like me. And I am way more privileged than many others I know. I canā€™t begin to imagine how they feel.
