Manchin is a deficit hawk, so the way to get him to agree to something is to threaten to blow up the deficit by forgiving maximum student debt if he doesnāt agree to something meaningful, for some definition of meaningful. The compromise is letting Manchin protect the coal industry while doing meaningful stuff in other areas. This would lead to little or no student debt relief if Manchin plays ball.
They already gave Manchin every single thing he asked for, at least twice, only for him to then tank the legislation anyway. Heās straight up sabotaging this presidency, willfully, and itās fucking insane theyāre still acting like his vote is gettable.
When they stop acting like his vote is gettable, they get ripped for not trying/being in on it.
Trying would be using the stick when the carrot has clearly not worked.

Manchin also tanked the global minimum corporate tax this week, which will cost the government hundreds of billions of revenue, so he can fuck all the way off, and you all can stop taking him seriously, re: ādeficit concernsā

They just donāt understand what he can be moved on.
He canāt be moved on the filibuster, the coal industry, and the deficit. And you probably canāt make him stick his neck out too far on culture war issues that make the typical West Virginian very uncomfortable.
Posters here think the stick is investigating his daughter. Iām giving people an alternative stick, but one that might make them happy if you get a deal done.
