Let's fight about artists with one clear *best* song

You done stepped in it now. The best song on RIP is either Tornado of Souls or Lucretia, although the entire album is a masterpiece except for the somewhat corny “I’ve mastered magics five” or whatever. Hangar 18 is arguably 3rd although I’d be inclined to go with Holy Wars.

Good song but pretty far down the list imo.

Best song is Come as You Are.

random fun fact re Queen:

My dad has a signed copy of Sheer Heart Attack, a first press vinyl from 1974. An old school friend of his was a roadie for them, and he personally asked the band to sign it for him as a special gift to celebrate the birth of my dad’s first son (me). Worth an absolute fortune.

Or at least it would be…

Signed by every band member except Freddie Mercury

Sweet Child O’ Mine G&R

They have so many good songs - Gouge Away, Caribou, Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Bone Machine, Nimrod’s Son.

I put them all together basically but Where is My Mind is my favorite. Probably because I have a bootleg from 1992 (we think maybe the Tin Machine tour) that ends with it. The whole thing is incredible.

I’ve seen them live like 20 times. My favourite band all time by far.

I dunno how you can pick that over a song with the line “I’ve seen a million faces - and I’ve rocked them all.”

This is very good. Just no way it could be anything else.

I think my second favorite song of theirs is Where Did You Sleep Last Night unplugged - which they didn’t write of course. And then also cover - Man Who Sold the World - from the same album might be 3rd.

I’m not the most hardcore Nirvana fan obviously.

Yeah there’s nothing I’ve ever heard live that comes close to that bootleg I have.

Have you been following the new podcast? It’s pretty awesome. Chronicles the making of their new album.

Who’s on it? Is Kim Diehl back?

Nope only member not back

That’s not even top 10 Sabbath. It’s not even the best song on that album. Sweet Leaf >>> Children of the Grave.

Probably another trivial one - Stayin Alive - Bee Gees

I put songs like Stayin’ Alive, Wonderwall, Fake Plastic trees, Darude - Sandstorm, Carter Family - Will the Circle be Unbroken, James Brown - Get Up (Like a Sex Machine), Outkast - Hey Ya - in this genre-irrelevant instant classic category where it’s just like “oh” the first time you hear it. There’s probably a blue grass classic out there I need to hear.

These are songs that I’m pretty sure you could play them for a New Guinean tribesman who’s never heard modern music and they’d get into it. I’m fascinated by what separates a decent hit from a song that you can basically never get tired of listening to.

Nah I don’t think they have a clear best. Their hits are pure gold and I would probably argue for Drive the hardest.

Drive
You Might Think
Shake It Up
You’re All I’ve Got Tonight
Magic

I think this is a good example. Most bands aren’t going to have an indisputable best song (The Beatles? Lol). But many bands have an iconic song. A song that put them on the map. Or a song that fans would be pissed off if they didn’t hear it at a concert.

There’s no point arguing about the best Springsteen song but his iconic song is Born to Run.

Other examples might be like My Sharona by The Knack or Bad to the Bone by George Thorogood.

So along these lines Bohemian Rhapsody is probably Queen’s most culturally iconic song, but it’s not even in their top 10 best songs.

You got some strong feelings on this?

Segueing from Sabbath, No More Tears clearly best Ozzy track.

Mulholland Drive directed by David Lynch

Alright by Kendrick Lamar

Sweat Leaf is amazing. But if Sabbath has an instant classic - it’s Paranoid. I’m partial to Iron Man though because there was nothing me and my friend loved better in 4th grade than singing that song.
