You know, it’s a gorgeous day up and down the CA coast. Makes me wish the Air Force had invested in building manned spaceflight support infrastructure at Vandenburg
I thought you were being sarcastic about dropping Flash support being a huge deal. I’m pretty shocked to learn that anybody is still using it for anything, never mind a financial services company.
One of Trump’s biggest things was working out a trade deal with China. China probably walks away from the table if America supports Hong Kong.
Anyway, China and HK have had a “One country, two systems” policy where HK has a degree of self-government. For example, they elected some of their government officials. For years, China has wanted to chip away at their system and integrate the city with their country. It strengthens the economy of China while weakening the economy and political influence of America.
I was reading that because HK was considered its own country China was using it to avoid terrifs and funneling a ton of their shit through them.
So throw Hong Kong under the bus while also adding pressure by making the tarrifs a lot harder to avoid. Not gonna lie, kind of a smart play. He will probably get a trade deal with China done before the election but I don’t think it will matter anymore. This is all about the pandemic and the economy. People aren’t going to care about a trade deal when there are 400k dead and we’re locked down during the 2nd wave.
HK, in many ways, is the complete opposite of China. HK was considered the freest economy in the world from 1995 to 2019. China’s economy is obviously not free. Hong Kong has a democratic system and elects its leaders. China has no elections at all. Hong Kong has far more respect for civil and human rights under their government. China has next to none.
Basically, nothing about HK falls under the tenets of Maoism or its replacement, Xi Jinping Thought. China thinks that it is a blight on their country because of this.
