@Trolly he’s probably best known for In Utero, also worked with Pixies and The Breeders
Yeah, okay you guys, I get it, I’m old and uncool and I don’t know who this Steve Albino guy is even though he was involved with some incredible bands. All I’m saying is that the Screaming Females are great and you should check them out.
Also, The Breeders are pretty fucking excellent? They had a recent-ish album and it owns pretty hard. You should all check that out too. I think I saw them at the Black Cat in DC many years ago. Because I was once a cool guy who used to catch these kinds of shows. Meow meow meow-meow-meow.
I too tied my transition to uncool to the day when I no longer recognized any of the bands listed on the Upcoming Shows calendar @ the Cat and started going to seated shows at The Lincoln Theater.
You can fight this. Precovid I was checking local venues and googling acts and watching their youtoobs. Turned me on to Sunflower Bean, which is solid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjIcHPr7z6Y May have turned me on to Warpaint a while ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOFxb0F2F2A Plan to continue doing this once covid is over.
Seeing a show is about the same price for me as walking into the local bar and forcing Neutral Milk Hotel, Animal Collective, Wilco, and such on the jukebox so that I’m not agitated by country pop.
I’m not really trying to fight it too hard. I’ve embraced who I like and am content to only occassionally discover new stuff when they open for the older acts I like on nostalgia tours [for example, I was on to Lizzo way before she blew up because she opened for Sleater-Kinney].
I saw them on that tour and the rest of Lizzo’s group was better than she was imo,
In terms of musical talent, I tend to agree. That being said, Lizzo definitely had the “it factor.” It’s hard for an opening act to win over a crowd, especially if your music if really different than the headliner, but she really got the crowd to buy into her.
Of course it sucks now. The whole point of it was as a shock to the system that was only supposed to last a year or two. It was pretty much over by '78 when the straights starting dressing up and sucking their cheeks in and most of the original crowd had moved on.
Bands like Green Day are a complete joke.
Pub quiz question tonight which I got 8/8 for: name the 8 most populous countries in the world which begin with a vowel. “United Kingdom” counts, if you think that is one. Give lists of 8 and I’ll call it when someone gets all 8. Going to bed soon though so will be tomorrow morn.
