LC Thread 2020: What the PUNK? ROCK.

I’ve always thought of Johny Cash as being legitimately subversive. But that’s mainly because of his song Jacob Green, which I think he wrote in the mid-eighties, and was basically an indictment of white society’s love of police/the criminal justice system:

Jacob’s father hired a team of lawyers. Inspections and long inquiries were held. The sheriff then retired and the papers said two guards were fired. They put a brand new coat of paint on Jacob’s cell

But like a tomb that looks so white and shiny, Inside you’ll find corruption never seen, And somewhere out there tonight in a dirty cell without a light, There will be locked up another Jacob Green

It happened yesterday and if you turn your head away. Somewhere in some dirty hole the scene will be rerun. Not only Jacob Green, but many more you’ve never seen

It could be someone that you love gets done. Like Jacob Green got done. It could be someone that you love gets done. Like Jacob Green got done

That’s good stuff, imo.

So I’ve got a perspective on Taylor Swift which is actually pretty developed, because my wife is a super fan. Like I’ve probably given Taylor Swift ~5k of my money over the years level super fan. I’m sure you can all imagine how much Taylor Swift has been on in my car over the last 12 years.

She’s a legitimately great song writer and represents a very good trend in music. See, from my perspective as a modestly ugly person, MTV was a disaster for popular music. The industry consigned talented people to background roles because they weren’t good looking enough, and it pushed people who hadn’t earned it and very much couldn’t handle it forward. As a result we got some truly shitty popular music between ~1990 and ~2005.

Thankfully at the exact same time the industries level of control over who was going to be popular started to slip significantly.

So along comes Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift plays a terrific guitar and is a god tier songwriter but she’s a trash singer (every school with 500 kids in it has 2-3 kids in show choir with vastly better vocal equipment than Taylor Swift… she’s such a gifted songwriter that she hides it almost entirely), and while moderately attractive she’s not in the same league as your typical late 90’s early 2000’s pop star. If her parents weren’t well heeled and well connected finance types or she arrived 10 years sooner she would have spent the first 20 years of her career as a probably very successful working songwriter. But it was 2004 and between herself and her parents there was more than enough leverage for her to get a record deal and get it properly promoted.

Truthfully there are worse people for your kids to use as role models than Taylor Swift. She’s handled her entire career quite well, seems like a decent human being considering the circumstances, and is legitimately talented.

I think it’s notable that in a thread where probably >50% of the people haven’t heard a single Taylor Swift song that wasn’t on the radio there were 4-5 songs that they were happy to post as evidence that she’s good… and none of them was all too well which is generally what most critics think is her best track.

Interestingly I’m not a huge fan myself mostly because I’m getting saturation bombed with it. If it was anything worse than decent this would be the reason I had gotten divorced years ago.

TLDR: Don’t be the idiot who says that someone else is responsible for the TS sound. TS is where she is because she can create that sound out of close to whole cloth at will. She’s a slightly above average looking white girl from Pennsylvania with a pretty shitty voice… who thankfully for her is a Paul McCartney/ Elton John level hit creator (age appropriate comparison made for context for the older people haha). When she brings in collaborators it’s because she wanted the sound of her next album to go in that direction, and she’s the one who made that call not anyone else.

I cannot be clear enough about this, when people made this argument seriously the first time after her second album she made her entire third album on her own to give them the finger… and it’s the same quality level as the rest. That album is pretty entertaining when listened to in context actually. She goes out of her way to write really good songs about stuff she has obviously lolzero experience with, genre switches all over the place, and generally demonstrates an insane level of understanding of the musical trends of the time.

eyebooger is correct, nice job. I considered Argentina briefly but cut it and decided on that list.

Bonus question, which is #4 behind India USA Indonesia?

Answer with 109 million is Ethiopia, Egypt 98m.

OK here’s an English-spelling attempt:

India
United States
Indonesia
United Kingdom
Iran
Italy
Ukraine
Argentina

Damn, I was considering both of those African countries

I’m leaving on a road trip this weekend to take a little vacation. I’m going to be in Charleston for the weekend, then I’m heading up to Va to visit my grand parents and then I’m going to probably head over to Asheville for four or five days to hang out in the mountains. Does anyone have any idea what Charleston is like right now as far as COVID restrictions are concerned?

I haven’t seen his bio pic, but Cash is certainly generally considered legit, whether punk or whatever.

Cash had a lot of subversive types on his old TV show in the late 60s, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, et al. A great vid of him and Dylan performing “Girl from the North Country” popped up on my FB feed a few months ago but for whatever reason I can’t find that footage on YouTube. The song is on there but I couldn’t find the clip from the TV show of them performing live together.

This sounds insane to me and I suspect a lot of people are biting their tongues out of politeness.

Cash had a natural inclination to support the underdog. He was awful poor as a kid and to his credit he seemed to have hung on to that compassion for the common man even as his personal status rose to basically as high as one could get in 20th century America.

Having said that, he was a religious white dude from Arkansas. I am sure he has much more faith in “America” than is supported by the facts.

I imagine most people here would agree with you.

Honestly, I welcome any criticism people want to throw at me. I’ve been in Florida where the whole approach has been much different and crazy compared to how people on here have been treating it.

Ego driven take that you really need to show your work on. This is like saying the only 2 hands in a range are AA and 78 off.

McEnroe was punk rock.
Tiger Woods was punk rock.
Tons of hip hop is definitely punk rock.
Youre actually discounting the entire Riot Grrrl movement?

What exactly are you defining it as because you’re argument is entirely self defeating.

Seems like you’re looking for an argument about something and have moved the goal posts in order to get one.

“Punk” music after about '77/'78 isn’t really punk but a sad retread of it.

The other things you’ve listed might or might not embody a punk attitude (Tiger Woods? lol) but aren’t what I was talking about with Trolly.

It’s the same with artists doing sad retreads of Duchamp’s ideas and calling themselves Dadaists.

There you go, now have some of it.

Nah he’s legit

If you really need to go see your grandparents, which I get, then at least go see them first before you go bombing around Charleston. Preferably after you spend a couple weeks doing everything you can to keep yourself from any and all possible exposure, and taking all the mask/distancing/outside precautions very seriously when you’re with them. You will quite literally never forgive yourself if you get them seriously sick, even if they recover.

Man, the level of gatekeeping that punk fans engage in is beyond parody.

If you think that punk rock only existing for 2 years is the academic take then I’m not gonna waste anymore keystrokes.

I take back what I said about my mother not getting into QAnon.

I mean the meme doesn’t mention QAnon directly but it does mention a bunch of Hollywood pediphiles (as written in meme). So the theories regarding QAnon are being repurposed and presented a little at a time to prime people into believing it when they hear about it.
