Met Police on the beat are almost all violence-loving scum - some of the things I know that have happened over the years are stomach-turning.
We don’t know the context but he’s unwise to behave like that with a bunch of psychopaths. Pre-Taser he’d have been taken outside and half-strangled on the pavement, then bundled into a van by about six of them, where he might have found he slipped unfortunately and injured himself. I might take my chances with the Taser.
If he was black the range of bad outcomes is obviously skewed.
There is no escape (as you found out). It was into the 90s at the beach yesterday. Note: for you easterners out there, AC is quite rare in this housing stock. Of course now w/covid our refuges, mainly the bars and movie theaters, and closed.
This morning things got worse. I awoke with a headache. The smoke from the massive wildfire near Alpine (eastern fringe of the San Diego metro area) has made the air putrid. But… we can’t close our windows or turn off all the fans sucking that putrid air inside.
Back in the day when I worked at a restaurant, we’d fill bags of ice and hang them around our necks in a horseshoe shape. Worked great on those days when it was 100F+ on the cooking line.
We actually were in wrightwood and it wasn’t bad, it was mid-80s. We were waiting on traffic and heat to die down before heading up to mammoth, then our generator croaked, which means no AC unless we ran the engine. On top of that, one of our friends in Mammoth texted and said not to come because the air quality was shit.
So here we are, back home. We know our power went out yesterday, too, so I’m fully expecting that to happen at some point today.
My weed chocolates melted at room temperature yesterday, in my bedroom. I had it at 96 degrees inside my house. Absolutely miserable.
Today I am going golfing and I actually love golfing when it’s this hot because all the wusses cancel their tee times and it’s super fast on the course.
Working on the roof with a straw hat I just put ice in the hat. If it’s really hot and I’m dumb enough to be working on a roof I dunk my shirt in ice water, wring it out, and put it on. For just around the house, hanging something around your neck is good.
It’s almost standard in new houses (maybe less than 15 years old or so) and it’s pretty ubiquitous in hotter places like the San Fernando Valley or anywhere in the desert areas (a lot of them used to have evaporative coolers, but you don’t see that much on houses less than about 50 years old anymore). Lots of older houses in moderately warm places like the LA Basin will have window AC units. AC is not as common in NorCal. Central Valley obviously any house anywhere near newish has AC.
I live in a 70 year old house near the beach. It’s not that hot here generally though. Yesterday it was 85 and it was 112 across town in Pasadena. It’s supposed to get into the 90s today though. Most of my icing experience is on the job, but having learned how good it is, I’ll use some ice even if it’s a bit uncomfortable at home.
eta: Neither my mom nor my m-in-l have AC and they live nearby, but slightly more inland and slightly hotter. I’m going to see my mom today, and probably my wife or I should check in on her mom and her mom’s 96yo husband.
In San Diego proper, it’s really not standard on most of the homes and apartments that were built before ~2000…which is the vast majority of them. Some put it in when they remodel, but up until the past few years, it really hasn’t been necessary.
It never used to get to 100 degrees at the beach.
Where I am is different, it’s inland, and is mountainous desert. We’re used to 100…but this weekend is exceptional. It’s rare to get above 105, and temps at our place hit 119 yesterday, according to our little mini weather station. That means it was probably 115ish since it tends to read a little high.
