This is the single most quintessential republican quote of all time. A total lack of empathy is the defining characteristic of being a republican. They simply are not able to comprehend the pain or suffering of other people. It’s basically sociopathy-light.

I just found out Everette didn’t write the song and wasn’t the first to record it. Apparently Levon Helm released a version in 1980 and Everette’s version was released in '81.
The lyrics are really something else when considering it was written at least 15 years prior to Hurricane Katrina.
