LC Thread 2020: What the PUNK? ROCK.

Fwiw I think it’s a terrible name. But of course I understand the point.

Hollywood Blvd about a week ago.

This…bothers me, to put it lightly.

For those who don’t know, FBE is a media company, primarily focused on internet videos, that runs several successful Youtube channels. Their first big success was the Kids React series and most of their videos feature a rotating cast of “reactors” responding to different things.

I’d been reluctant to delve into the social media presences of the people involved because I wanted to have emotional separation from the people I watch. The shows pimp how you can find the reactors on Twitter and Instagram because they want you to form that sort of connection to their cast and make them a part of your lives, because that drives subscriptions and views and merchandise and online membership fees.

Now, I’ve been sucked into reading about it all. I could forgive the issue of blackface in isolation, but the behind-the-scenes treatment of women and minorities is not good and it seems even worse because it has come from a company that has been very publicly performative about diversity. It gives me more confirmation that working in a corporate environment would have made me miserable and might have killed me.

Part of me is heartened that this saga involves young people finding their voice and the will to stand up for beliefs about issues they weren’t necessarily interested in just a few years ago. Watching them grow in real-time has been a pleasure.

The clock is ticking. The founders have reportedly decided to step away for a bit while the company decides what to do, but a company VP tweeting negative things about trolls and millennials before deleting her account doesn’t bode well.

I am curious to see if anything changes and what new and greater things that those who have left will move on to.

So she’s basically Wesley Willis, but without mental illness and the exploitation?

This is really important to me and any help would be greatly appreciate.

Alright guys I need some help. I need to write a letter to the leaders of an underground community I love and care about and have been apart of for 10 years. They’re all pretty progressive but the problem is they have been completely silent on the situation surrounding us and haven’t taken and active stands on these issues like BLM.

So heres what I have to send right now but I’m hoping some of you much smarter people can help me have a better and more impactful statement.

Hey buddy. I wanted to talk to you about an issue me and many of my fellow tribers are concerned about. We feel the ongoing silence of tribe on the social issues facing this country is having negative impacts on the community.

A huge part of the magic of moontribe is the community. The love and joy we share with each other, a place we feel we can go to and not be judge and be loved and appreactiate for who we are. So when moontribe is completely silent on these issues it makes members of the community question that magic. Are we really a community that loves and accepts everyone if we aren’t taking a stand on these social issues as an official organization and let the members of our community know we love them and fully support them. I don’t know the interworkings of organizers but if there is anything I can do to help this cause let me know.

Anyways I love you brother and hope you’re doing well.

FBE is so douchey. They provide nothing of value in their “original” content. It’s just recording people responding to previously existing videos.

They tried to copyright their “react” style video format and sell them onto other people for a profit. Fuck them.

If this is the full-moon desert gathering people google suggests it is, I suspect you’ll get pushback about how it’s not about politics etc. It might be worth trying to forestall that objection? You can say that you’re not asking for a BLM-themed event or for statements to be made at an actual gathering, just for some kind of statement from whatever official mouthpiece the organisation has.

Does the initial letter sound pretty good assuming I add in that we aren’t looking for any significant changes, just public support online so vulnerable people in the community knows we have their back.

Never hurts to be entirely explicit about something like that, so you might throw a line in spelling it out. Otherwise the letter seems very good and tactful.

Fix a couple of typos and include what action you would like to see (as All-InFlynn suggests) and it looks good to me.

judge → judged
appreactiate → appreciated

Thank you guys so much. Updated version

Hey buddy. I wanted to talk to you about an issue me and many of my fellow tribers are

concerned about. We feel the ongoing silence of tribe on the social issues facing this

country are having a negative impact on the community. Vulnerable people in the community

feel like moontribe doesn’t have their back with their silence.

A huge part of the magic of moontribe is the community. The love and joy we share with

each other, a place we feel we can go to and not be judged and be loved and appreactiated.

for who we are. So when moontribe is silent on these issues it makes members of the

community question that magic. Are we really a community that loves and accepts everyone

if we aren’t taking a stand on these social issues in an official capacity as an

organization to let the members of our community know we love them and fully support

them.

I feel like an official statement online would go a long way. And beyond that we can braindstorm some other ways to show support and respect for the volunerable people in out community.

I don’t know the interworkings of the organizers but if there is anything I can do to

help this cause let me know. Maybe if i can get a lot more people pushing for it?

Anyways I love you brother and hope you’re doing well.

Minor nits:

‘appreactiated’ still needs to be ‘appreciated’ and ‘braindstorm’ needs to be ‘brainstorm’

Apart from that, good to go :ok_hand:

I’ve always been a big fan of the Pulp Librarian’s twitter account; this thread on Zardoz is pretty great. The director once pitched a Lord of the Rings movie with Kabuki and the Beatles? I would watch the fuck out of that! Also, Sean Connery shot the director in the face and Kubrik was somehow involved (I didn’t know that).

One of the things I’ve had on my to-do list is listen to the director’s commentary of Zardoz. I’ve heard many good things about it.

This is everything I know about Zardoz, because the first time I saw this image I immediately decided I never wanted to learn anything else about Zardoz.

I just can’t see eye-to-eye with you here, my man. Because when I see Sean Connery in thigh-high boots and a ponytail and a mankini holding a revolver I immediately want to know everything about what’s going on. I am a huge sucker for psychedelic science fiction from the late 60’s-70’s, Zardoz is so very much in my wheelhouse.
