I resign

I just wanted a moratorium on permabans until we came up with rules to address moderator ban power. It was meant to be a temporary fix that created an incentive for people to actually work on a solution if they wanted people to be permanently banned from the forum.

“single worst poster on this forum”

I explained this all already, including posting the PMs I sent to the other mods.

You guys are simultaneously trying to argue how much I dislike CN as a poster and that I went to great lengths to hatch an elaborate plan to save him. Like what?

Can you make a list of which members are allowed to be attacked and which are not? You didn’t seem very concerned about all the recent personal attacks on Iron, as an example. So I think we need a list of posters free to be attacked, and a list of posters who are allowed to freely attack, before we can make an informed decision.

goreo vandalized this site. It went beyond protesting.

Goreo’s reaction was reasonable. Maybe it took away some fun stuff, but it didn’t diminish the basic ability to communicate.

I don’t think you had an elaborate plan.

Posters whose only posts are in about unstuck or attacks on other posters will be removed from this site if I remain as a mod. Posters who don’t post for months and suddenly pop up to attack another poster or the community will be removed if I remain as a mod of this forum.

I’m going to start there, and will also respond to any flagged posts I see.

I’m not sure if that’s true and even if it were it wasn’t his any longer.

Seems like you’re a little bit deranged there, boss.

Please don’t criticize goreo. I will personally take the blame for any ill will people have about that decision.

I’d like MEb’s detractors to operate under the assumption that he’s being sincere in what he posts in this thread and that any inconsistencies are just him being dumb or not having thought things through or just being the kind of guy who changes his mind like a girl changes clothes.

I’m interested in cleaning this place up. If that’s not what the community wants, then I won’t be here anymore.

I’d be happy to hear a constructive argument from you about the value added to a forum by posters whose only posts are personal attacks or attacks on the forum.

Well obviously 10 year bans are an instant way around a perma-moratorium. So it’s just symbolic at this point.

What about posters who tend to lurk and only post if they have something important to say that no one else is saying or if they see something they consider really wrong and they want to voice their opposition?

How are they positively contributing to the forum if their only contribution is to pop in with an attack every few months?

That just creates incentive for the side that wants no bans to work on a solution, too.

MEb fucked up by doing things that can’t be undone.

Barely. I helped him on a few problems.

I understand now why goreo did what he did and I don’t support what meb did. I should have read the mod voting thread more closely.

I don’t have a strong opinion one way or the other if jal and church are given 10 year bans, since I am almost never in the same threads with them anymore. But I do care if normal posters lose their shit about it.

There are two aspects to the forum, posting and reading. The lurkers read and it’s a barometer of sorts if things are so bad that they are moved to come out of their complacency and post. If they don’t matter, then the purpose of this forum should be creating a space for people to post what they want without a care for whether people want to read that shit. The idea that we should get rid of bad posters is based on the idea that reader enjoyment matters.

I’ve always taken the stance that the forum should prioritize the posting experience over the reading experience. After all, it is theoretically easy to ignore people, although I admit that many posters seem to have a character flaw where they are unable to do that. There are other people who want a more curated forum that only has the stuff they want to read.

FYI, I have returned Churchill and jalfrezi’s accounts back to their names.
