I guess we need a Summer Olympics thread…?

The most Zverev thing would be now losing the final to an underdog.

US women’s soccer team has had 9 offside goals this tournament and at least 3 tonight

The last 4 goals in this US Women’s soccer match have been disallowed for offsides lol

Why is the standard TV angle for penalties the side-angle? It’s very hard for the viewer to quickly discern whether it might be a successful try, or if there may be a chance for a save.

Then you invariably get a replay from the behind-the-shooter angle, and it’s worlds better for immediately picking up on how the penalty is unfolding. But you never get that view live.

My buddy’s sister came in 7th in her heat and 17th overall to just miss out on qualifying for the finals by a half second in the 5k. Her heat was much slower and she probably qualifies if she’s in the first heat based on where the American in that heat finished but still an amazing performance

What happened?

With Canada leading, 3-2, in the 78th minute Monday, Pedersen ruled that Canada’s goalkeeper, Erin McLeod, held the ball for more than six seconds after making a save. The ensuing free kick led to a penalty kick in what turned out to be a 4-3 win for the Americans.

The rule in question falls under Law 12 of FIFA’s Laws of the Game. FIFA’s official interpretation of that law includes a notation that states “a goalkeeper is not permitted to keep control of the ball in his hands for more than six seconds.”

But U.S. Soccer, the English Football Association and other governing bodies have emphasized to referees that the rule is discretionary, and is not meant to be called except for egregious violations.

On the play, according to The New York Times, McLeod caught a corner kick, fell to the grass, got up after about four seconds, then punted the ball away 10 or 11 seconds later. Other accounts of the match had McLeod releasing the ball after about eight seconds.

US awarded free kick due to Canadian keeper holding on to the ball too long in.a game where Canada was up a goal and running out the clock. US scored on free kick to tie it up and went on to win

Well they only got 1 extra chance. ‘72 Russians got 3 tries in hoops.

Canada was leading 3-2 late in the second half off a Christine Sinclair hat trick, and the referee called our keeper for a six-second violation (basically saying that she was stalling with the ball). It’s a call that’s made basically never. Plus there was no warning or anything, which is customary. The Americans converted the resulting free kick into a penalty, scored from the spot and won in extra time.

It was probably the greatest women’s game ever played, but the way it ended was such BS.

This is the dumbest thing ever.

Either something is a rule or it’s not. If it is, it should be called every time.

“Discretionary rule”. WTF is that shit?

basically the entirety of the soccer rule book is discretionary. Rules are more general guidelines and referees are given huge amounts of leeway to decide what’s fair or not. For example, if a forward challenges a GK and hits them slightly, it’s a foul the vast majority of the time. If a GK murders a forward as they hit a shot wide, it’s not a foul generally.

There’s tons of unwritten stuff that people just know and accept.

Yeah, and I hate them (in all sports).

Unwritten rules just serve as a potentially exploitable advantage to nefarious actors.

Just based on the announcer’s reactions last night in the women’s all-around - it sure seemed like they thought the Russian should have won it. She did get 1/10th added back on the balance beam.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the judges are rat-fucking Russia as part of their punishment.

? It’s always that live.

Every single game its broken 10x over. It’s like how we just saw with Giannis and his free throws. Unless you’re getting to like 13+ it’s fine.

No one is hurt by a goalie having the ball for 8 seconds or Giannis taking 12.

Live angle is almost always this:

Then in replays they always give you this:

#2 >>> #1, IMO, so I don’t understand why they don’t show #2 live.
