Somewhat related, but the Italian women just trounced everyone in volleyball, only dropping a single set breezing to gold. Apparently they’d invested a ton of money in that program and it’s paying dividends. But it’s weird to me that they made up so much ground b/c I’m sure USA and Brazil (and prob others) have been investing a lot in volleyball for years, plus the university system in USA seems to produce tons of good players. I wonder if they just happened to have a golden generation or if they’re really outspending everyone by a crazy amount.
I know about the Dopey Challenge because a buddy of mine who makes shocking choices has done it every year since it’s started, so I think the last 12 or 13 years?? He’s said that there are like 400 other Immaculate Dopey freaks (not his words) so this is just his life now. I don’t understand it and don’t want to
VPN to France 2 if you want to actually watch the closing ceremony and not have 40 min of ads every hour and dipshits like Jimmy Fallon talking over everything on NBC.
My dad was a US Swimming official and he officiated several Paralympic trials over the years. These athletes are absolutely incredible to watch. I highly recommend it.
At the end of the Paris show, they passed the Olympic torch to Tom Cruise who then “flew it” (pre-recorded) to LA (where the 2028 games are). There was then a live show from LA with Californian artists (which I assume they showed on the screen in the Paris stadium). I guess if you were in Paris expecting to see these live you would be disappointed (and admittedly they would be higher profile than the French ones, even more so for an American) but it was also very predictable that this would be done this way.
Phoenix and friends (who played in the stadium) were really good though.
What do a bunch of kids care about Snoop Dogg, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Dr. Dre anyway? I guess Billie Eilish.
But yeah the LA thing was pretty weird. The acts above playing on a beach in Long Beach (even though Tirico said Venice, it was later corrected to Long Beach) in front of maybe 50 fans.
Oh wait, people paid to go see the closing ceremonies expecting those acts live? Hmmm.
I thought it was idiotic to have like 35% of the show devoted to LA. IIRC in the past they’d pass off the torch and do maybe a 5-minute video package about the next host city and that’s it.
