A quick, rough calculation shows that if you draw your grandparents randomly, there’s about a 50% chance that one of a Boomer’s grandparents was not born in the US. Of course the problem of calculating this number is more nuanced.

My maternal grandparents were Quebecois. Though we recently learned that Meme’s parent were married in Lowell Mass. Her Dad was listed as a mill operator when they got married in 1892. Meme was born about 10 months later back in Quebec.
My guess is that by the 1890s is was fairly rough living in the mill towns for the new Frenchies. Earlier arrivals had done very well, especially during and after the Civil War. So a theoretical outcome is that he followed a family member to Lowell, got a job, sent for her and got married. Then when they were expecting, they decided conditions were not good and went back to Canada where they remained- eventually moving as olds to the French speaking part of eastern Ontario 100+ miles north of Toronto (following another child).
My grandmother got married in Quebec and moved to upper Michigan in the 1910s.
So nobody natural born until my Mom and most of her siblings in the 20s and 30s.
How can you have more than 4 grandparents?
Yeah that puzzles me, too.
Also it just occurred to me that people who’s parents are (half-)siblings couldn’t vote! 
Case in point: Donald Trump has exactly zero American born grandparents. All four did not speak English as their first language.

I have some American born ancestors, but they stayed loyal to the King during the American Revolution and moved to Canada. Unsure if they were tortured, beaten, or raped on their way out as was somewhat common with loyalists.
This country would be Star Trek utopia if only people with at least one foreign-born grandparent could vote.
Need people who still believe in the American Dream instead of people angry because it passed them by.

My read is she means at least as pure blooded as 4 grandparents. I.e. 8 great grandparents would be more.
