GOP insanity containment thread 3: more human than strom thurman

You can make an argument that vaccinations increase the average lifespan which increases elderly population as a percentage of the total, which would cause rising cancer rates. Vaccines obviously arent causing it, and of course I am not saying that, but saying “cancer rates are going down” is demonstrably false, no matter what you want to attribute the cause

Isn’t that literally the point of the post you’re replying to?

I think there’s a lot of nuance to this. According to this government website, new cancer rates per 100,000 and the death rate per 100,000 both peaked around 1992 and have been waning since then.

I think that if you are go back earlier than 1975 the older data is harder to parse because of lower quality data and the substitution effects. It’s very difficult to account for how decreases in one cause of death impact other causes of death.

These are age adjusted rates.

ahhh, drat, I’ve become the pedantry I was hoping to avoid

I think the age adjusted rates are what is relevant to the spurious claims? If vaccination drives up cancer rates, then you would want to “correct” for age effects and normalize the data.

Can we also normalize for “olds used to just die” whereas now access to cancer diagnosis is much more common.

Yeah, we’re definitely back in territiory of dies “from” COVID or “with” COVID in a sense, there are limits to the data and the people that know a lot about it and care about the truth will acknowledge and work around the limits, while people that want to push misinformation will drive a wedge in the gaps in the data and use them to mislead.

And on top of that we keep filling the environmental with toxins, hormone analogs…

While at the same time cancer treatments have become more effective

So add in the diagnosis issue and the data becomes pretty hard to interpret.

If the leading epidemiologists have interpretations, those are very likely the best available vs us google searchers or RFK crackpots.

Unless you are the half of the country that deeply and honestly believes the leading epidemiologists are evil fraudsters making people sick on purpose to enrich themselves.

Half? You SSC?

Everyone dies of cancer would be a huge improvement.

The anti-vaxxers are going to cure cancer by killing us all before we can get cancer.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2025/03/27/walmart-fires-woman-trans-hate-bathroom/

6’4" woman who works for Wal-mart and is not trans is using the bathroom. Man comes in yelling about how he’s going to get all trans people. Woman waits for him to leave, reports incident to her supervisor. A week later Wal-mart fires her for “creating a security risk by not reporting the incident to the right people”.

She goes viral, Wal-mart is trying to hire her back. Fuck everyone.

My now-radicalized-by-covid BIL went hard in the paint that two girls on the opposing 8th grade girls basketball team were “obviously trans” and how it was completely dangerous and unfair. They were just bigger/taller/a different race so I guess they weren’t “cute enough” for him to be sexually attracted to.

I told him he just wanted to inspect some kids genitals and he got very upset.

I am now convinced that telling transphobe bigots that they just want to look at kids’ genitalia is a winning line.

I saw a post, I can’t find it, but it described the State Department’s attempts to deport pro Palestinian activities as cancel culture on a scale and severity that not even the most lefty illiberal kinds were dreaming of. No clear lines on what would save a person from being deported or what lines were crossed, all done post hoc, with no due process with the potential of getting sent to a prison or back to an hell hole at a moment’s notice.

A newly introduced bill in Texas would require online sellers to show a photo ID before buying a dildo.

SB 3003, introduced by Senator Angela Paxton (wife of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton), would criminally charge online retailers for selling “an obscene device” without verifying the buyers’ age. Sellers would have to require customers to submit their government-issued photographic identification, or use “third-party age verification services that use public records or other reliable sources to verify the purchaser’s identity and age,” the bill says. Owning a credit card, which already requires the holder to be over 18 years of age, would not be enough.

The religious freaks saw how requiring photo ID stopped PornHub and now they’re going back to their old shit. The thing is I could get behind some age verification for porn, but there’s no reason, other than they don’t like people to enjoy themselves, to prohibit sex toys.

Hopefully it won’t pass.

Anything can be a dildo if you’re motivated enough.

I think there are a lot of people who underestimate just how much influence extreme religious people/views have in conservative politics in the US. People who didn’t grow up in religious conservative families/communities think oh they just want to go after trans people, everyone is ok with gay marriage! And they are dead wrong. I’d bet a sizable amount of money that well over half of Republican voters would be ok with a society like what’s depicted in Handmaids Tale.

That’s a good line.

A similar approach would be when they have cis daughters and demand that their genitals be inspected, for safety obviously. I mean, how can we really know for sure?

You’ve got it all wrong. We want it to pass. The more and dumber shit they do, the more likely people get flipped. And this comes with a much lower cost than outlawing abortions.
