It’s hard to fathom a government that would not tolerate this website existing being preferable to one that does. Even if it’s made up of really smart people. Kissinger4life.
FWIW, I’d wager the number of Unstuck posters who’d pass the civil service exam to work in Beijing’s government is quite low.
I’d end all social media including this site in 2 seconds if it was an option. Not even close to kidding. I’d be fine with keeping social media small/local run as a public utility with no ads, but there’s absolutely zero doubt in my mind right now that social media in it’s current form is social cancer full stop. I genuinely think people are going to look back on this early wild west era of the internet with complete shock in a hundred years. They’re going to think about it the way we think about people using lead as a food additive in the late 1800’s now.
As to the people on this site passing Beijings civil service exam… lol I think you’re hugely underestimating how good at taking tests the average member of this community is.
In the future, social media content delivery will rely on a highly personalized AI that curates information in a way that makes Facebook algorithms seem highly antiquated.
Absolutely no way for that to happen without the primary purpose of the ai being to stop humans from shitting in the digital public square.
There won’t be a civilization remaining if we keep going this way for another century. The status quo has most people at an advanced stage of hyper normalization already.
there’s already a demand for digital customers to run counter-targeting software that tries to understand who is trying to get your attention and feed you product or narratives.
The DOJ really is the solution to the current generation of GOP politicians. They’ve all committed the kind of acts that would get you real prison time if the laws were actually real. Unfortunately we’ve got Merrick fucking Garland as the AG and he seems to think letting your political opponents commit felonies for political gain is preferable to locking up your political opponents for crimes they are extremely guilty of.
Dear god is the GOP lucky I’m not in Biden’s seat right now. I wouldn’t have nominated anyone who didn’t tell me that they believed that laws are for enforcing no matter what the political optics are like unprompted.
I’ll never forgive anyone who had the power to do it for not putting the cuffs on Trump <1 hour after he was no longer POTUS. Spineless cowards all of them. In Trump’s case the charge would be sedition and then whatever else I could find in discovery ldo.
Nixon never did anything close to as bad as try to actively prevent the peaceful transition of power. That demanded an iron fist. It’s the kind of thing you have people killed for if you can’t get them legally. Thankfully Trump has done all the crimes.
It’s the kind of thing they used to have you hung drawn and quartered for in the old days… and that was actually a pretty reasonable response. Can’t have people not scared of what happens if the coup fails.
Absolutely nothing in this post is hyperbole. I mean it. I mean tortured to death in the public square in as brutal and sadistic a way as can be imagined. Some stuff can’t be OK, and the logical response is something out of a drug cartel social media post. Anything less does enormous damage to the legitimacy of the government.
i heard a podcast opine on Merkel’s legacy. she always headed a broad coalition, for an unthinkably long 16 years, and there’s still great intrigue who will take over afterwards, and what coalition will form. i would rather have that, instead of a benevolent dictator.
Pretty bold to paint this as a victory for rule of law when the best that rule of law could do when busting a rich cheater is to make him pay a little less than what he would have otherwise owed.
