I actually think it is a testament to how well the Conservatives have sold a simple, easy to understand narrative about the consequences of “socialism”/“Communism.” A lot of people hear the words and immediately think of Soviet-era breadlines or Venezuelan fuel shortages.
So, even though shortages are also common in capitalist systems, the narrative has gotten people to believe that a true free market would always provide so the shortages must be the result of some bad intervention in the market by big government.

Funny was watching Jim jefferies podcast today (filmed weeks ago) and it was about World War II. He literally said “when people complain about taking statues down causing us to forget, you won’t find any Hitler or nazi statues in Germany yet we somehow remember.”
