It’s easy to forget that some conservatives are just, well, conservatives. They want things to basically not change. Your Mitt Romney types and your Joe Biden types. They would all be perfectly happy if the scope of debate in the US was between Mitt’s and Joe’s views of the world, where they agree on like 99% of things and more or less stay the course. That’s why Mitt and Joe probably their own party’s “extreme” members than they hate each other.
