I donāt think this is quite true. Southern whites couldnāt make a bid for national hegemony but they were trying. Lots of ādonāt tread on meā stuff but they never stopped there. They envisioned America has a slaveholding nation, though slaveholding was the best way of life, and pushed to have slave holding where and when they could. Their coalition just was too extreme and concentrated in one regional area.
The 1930s is instructive because the KKK did spread further than slavery did precisely because it focused on the racial community aspect of white nationalism rather than the specific slave holding economic agreements. The Southern Strategy got even further by further diluting the specifics of white nationalism, until you have a generalized idea of reactionary conservativism of which white nationalism is a major aspect but not the core of it.
