This perfectly encapsulates the lack of self-awareness that has infected the majority of GOP supporters. The mental gymanastics that is required to not recognize you’re voting against your own self-interest and, as in this case, behave in a way that violates your own moral/ethical code until it has a direct impact on you, is a remarkably sad quality of the human condition.
