I posted an article from Splinter a while back, in the economics thread, that did a decent job explaining how these business takeovers work.
They finance the purchase of the company putting only a tiny percentage down.
They put all the debt for buying the company on the company itself.
They slash costs and try to pump up revenue. In the short term this delivers profits, before the customers wise up.
They charge the company consulting and management fees to the company the entire run.
Once it is no longer delivering anything they walk away.
There are variations on this but that is a general blueprint of how they make money on these deals. It is extremely low risk for them because they only put a small amount of their own money on the line.
Edit: ironically since I linked the splinter article, splinter itself died a private equity murder.
The problem goes beyond electing enough Ds. There are way too many progressives who are indifferent to taking drastic measures to curb fossil fuel use. They are too concerned with short term economic stress that might come from increasing the price of energy, they aren’t willing to voluntarily pay more taxes to help the most vulnerable. Some of these things should have been forced on people, but we were too worried about getting along or getting re-elected or whatever.
According to a quick google, “Your scholarship may or may not be taxable. Generally speaking, a scholarship or fellowship is tax free if you are a degree candidate and the award is used to pay for tuition and required fees, books, supplies and equipment, however there are some scholarship and fellowship opportunities that are not tax exempt.”
The income would presumably be taxable like any other income.
Of course but he wishes he was born 150 years ago so he could personally own slaves. It’s stupid as there are all sorts of scholarships that are not financial dependent and all those recipients can make money.
When I went on a recruiting trip to Duke in 2001 the coach of the sport I was being recruited for took me to basketball practice and casually called players “little n******.” It’s pretty much impossible for normal people to grasp the casual racism.
Don’t know if anyone here is a Vue subscriber but they are going away. Sony was looking for a buyer but the nature of media contracts made it a pretty tough sell.
Unfortunately (or not I guess), the packaged streaming options are dwindling. ATT has increased prices like six times since they entered and then introduced cable “features”. YouTube Tv is decent and what I use and there are others like Sling etc.
It is unfortunate we are never going to see true pick and choose ala Carte. Instead we will just have $5-$20 content bundle packages from streaming services. The net effect is better than the old cable tv model but still less than ideal and still leaves people paying for a lot of stuff they don’t necessarily want.
Not to mention it is not clear current streaming service pricing can actually support the content being developed.
I’m a Vue customer and have been really happy with the service. That said, one of the great things about streaming is the simplicity of changing providers. Switching over to YouTube will be a cinch.
Also, I’ll always wonder why they called it PlayStation Vue instead of Sony Vue or something like that. Would it have made a difference? Probably not, but I’m sure they lost out on plenty of business from people who just assumed (rightfully so) that you need a PlayStation to use the service.
