For the record, Shawshank Redemption might be the most overrated movie of all time, imo. I am a big fan of the prison genre and I find Shawshank just okay. I doubt I could squeeze it into my top 100.

Shawshank is a great movie. I’d say it’s a perfect movie. But is it the best movie? Depends on if it’s the only prison movie you’ve ever seen.
I would rather watch Brubaker over Shawshank and Brubaker is average to mediocre.

The Green Mile was excellent, but I don’t find myself filled with the impulse to watch it again. Cool Hand Luke is like that. Escape Plan was fun but so dystopian with its technology that it may as well be a Face/Off sequel set in that same supermax prison.
And there are a ton of movies or tv shows that were certainly not in the genre but had terrific storylines or scenes set in prison. The first half of Prison Break season 1 was perfection, but then of course Fox saw they had a hit and stretched a six-episode mini-series into four seasons.
color of money is not on Netflix for those like me who needed to look it up to save some of you a small amount of time.
The Color of Money is a fantastic pool and gambing movie. It is also a penomenal BOOK, though the book by Walter Tevis bears little resemblance to the movie script–since Jackie Gleason died, between making The Hustler and TCOM.
I’ve probably read TCOM more times than any other book. Can’t recommend enough (after distancing myself from the book’s misogyny).
