No matter how progressive and pro equality I think I am, this is why I’ll always refer to myself as a recovering racist. I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve never even thought about forgiving student loan debt from this angle before
I get what you’re saying and definitely have to think more about it. I’ve always viewed our education system as favoring the white or middle class and oppressing poorer minority communities from K thru the 12th grade. That is to say, I never even thought about college opportunities and assumed the entirety of our educational system was unfair and good education was biased towards mostly white and upwardly mobile people
That said, it can’t be a good thing for anyone if whites and ( I have to assume at least a fair number of non-whites?) start off life saddled with insurmountable debt. It can’t be good for them and it can’t be good for the ever growing wealth inequality problem we face. So I still have to side with forgiving student debt and making public colleges tuition free and investing in educational opportunities for poor communities
I had not considered a Marianne VP pick. Would certainly be unorthodox but on the other hand Oprah voters are exactly the demographic Bernie needs the most.
Honestly ‘Libs’ would be wise to understand the way you change what people think are not by voting them off the island but listening to what they have to say and politely explaining that they are wrong. If you can’t explain it to these types of people how will you ever win on the ‘battlefield of ideas’?
If going with Baldwin gives Bernie + >1% WI equity, f the seat. I’d be mildly concerned with the lack of minority representation but I like this pick better than Warren.
That said Tammy should definitely be on the short list. Making sure WI has a strong Dem candidate to run for her seat is important though. She is probably the most liberal Senator in the country relative to the state she is elected from.
