I get a little bit tired of hearing my opponents saying — ‘Gee, how you going to pay for a program that impacts and helps children or working-class families or middle-class families? How you going to pay for that?’ And yet, where are people saying, ‘How are you going to pay for over $750 billion on military spending?’ How you going to pay for a trillion dollars in tax breaks to the 1% in large corporations which was what [President] Trump did? When you help the billionaires and you help Wall Street, ‘Hey! Of course we can pay for it. That’s what America’s supposed to be about.’ Well, I disagree.
Yeah thats a close one. Giving up a liberal senate seat in WI is fucking tough, but yeah if it gives bernie more win equity in the state its probably worth it.
It’s not like we’re gonna pass a bunch of progressive shit through the senate anyways. And she can always go back, assuming she doesn’t end up being the president.
To me Julian Castro seems like the ideal pick if he wants it. Seemed to track close to Bernie on a number of issues, endorsed Warren who will likely endorse Bernie when she drops out, young, Texan, and most importantly doesn’t have to resign anything.
On the other hand, it’s hard to imagine Bernie tying himself to someone from Obama’s cabinet.
Here’s my suzzer lock prediction of the decade (yes I’m calling it that early):
All this wild gesticulating by the elites about a Bernie candidacy (and to a slightly lesser degree, Warren) will be followed by a “hey maybe we should make some more concessions to the working class before they metaphorically lop our heads off” capitulation. This should come immediately once either candidate, and it looks like Bernie, gets the nom. This includes stuff like Lol Starbucks guy, and Bloomberg’s candidacy - which is probably destroying Biden more than anyone.
They are throwing their last hail marys right now to try to avert a populist worker-class and broke millennials candidacy. Once they regain themselves and realize they can still be fabulously wealthy if they just pitch in a tiny bit more to the commons, they will.
Same thing happened in Gangs of NY when the slum-dwelllers rioted and started smashing windows uptown. Same thing happened with FDR when a literal socialist revolution was a legit fear. Same thing happened after WWII when they were grateful so many young men from the working class gave their lives so the elites didn’t have to speak German.
We just have to get Bernie over the finish line.
Lol WaPo fragging Liz because they didn’t take Bernie seriously. It’s Trump mirror image.
That’s one option. The other is to make a bargain with fascists to retain elite power. Tommy Douglas put it like this:
Fascism begins the moment a ruling class, fearing the people may use their political democracy to gain economic democracy, begins to destroy political democracy in order to retain its power of exploitation and special privilege.
This doesn’t describe the nuts-and-bolts mechanism of the popular appeal of fascism (that is, appeal to the past, cult of personality and so on), the idea is that fascism only really takes hold when seized on by elites as a bulwark against socialism or other leftist policies. There’s a Matt Christman solo episode of Chapo where he expounds on this idea at length:
Fortunately I think much of the economic elite regard Trump as so incompetent and personally revolting that they might not be willing to make this bargain, but you’re already seeing some “Yo, if it’s Sanders v Trump, I gotta reluctantly go Trump” takes around the place. You can imagine that if Trump wasn’t patently such a moron, even more of the elite would climb on board.
Sanders told the crowd in Austin, “on my first day in office, through an executive order, we will legalize marijuana in every state in this country, and we will expunge the records of those arrested for it.”
“As the son of an immigrant, I will on day one [as president] end the demonization of the immigrant community in this country,” Sanders told the crowd. “On day one through an executive order, we will repeal all of trump’s racist immigration executive orders.”
amazing, wasnt watching MSNBC during the results so its funny to see them all in one place. The sigh from the person announcing the caucus preference was hilarious
The Pete camp managed to figure out what caucuses he did the best at in such a way that they were able to report him in 2nd place: Pete Buttigieg Official Website
Not once in the entire time the results came out was Pete ever shown in 2nd place by any media outlet. But now hours after the race has been called, AP has declared who got 2nd, etc, Pete’s website shows this, stuck at 35% vote:
