Dealing with Deplorable Family and Friends

Yes.

For me, no. Though it definitely strains the relationship for me.

This happened to you/someone you know, didn’t it? It seems too detailed especially compared to the previous hypothetical. And yeah this is well beyond it.

Oh yeah. All three of them are my personal experience. My dad, stepmom, and half-sister have all gone rapidly off the deep end since Trump was elected.

kids in cages at the border was my breaking point. I axed anyone who came out in favor of that.

consequently, my personal feed is relatively deplorable-free. I do stay in my local groups for info and to spy on the neighbors, and they are probably 80% deplorable.

Same. I unfollowed my mother to avoid seeing her deplorableness. My sisters did the same.

However, I’m beginning to unfollow people who only post about politics. They depress me. I offset any political (or at least sad) posts with a cool/funny video to even things out.

Sadly, my mother follows me and broke our unspoken agreement to ignore each other’s political views. Typical JAQing off about “What will parents do with their kids if schools stay closed blah blah blah?”

Her being on #TeamOpenSchools is the least surprising thing ever.

I also can’t imagine a single response that would change her mind. Time to watch Reno 911 instead!

Anyone that says to never cut out family is an intellectual and emotional child.

Has anybody said that here?

Yea, there was one guy, kept talking about how he knew that the massive racists/misogynists/homophobes had his back, so he was never going to cut them out.

We showed him!

I guess if you count the Trump bot as a person, then technically yes.

I was answering this question. The line for each person is different but if anyone gives you shit for having a line they’re a dumb dumb.

I remember exactly which poster it was. It was his father and his best friend since childhood.

Ah, so you were raised catholic?

Lutherans can use family guilt trips as effectively as Catholics. I think that was only common ground they had during the reformation.

“Nothing makes sense anymore”

Well, it sure as shit got that part right

Yep, this exactly. “The cruelty is the point” isnt just some meme, it’s an accurate statement of their positions

It’s funny in our recent school board meetings hearing all the same parents who usually argue to cut school funding and the typical meow chow about small govt and bootstraps insist that the govt needs to fund their personal baby sitters.

Should I feel guilty about this exchange? I think I know the answer but sometimes it’s helpful to engage the hive mind.

My sister, on social media, a week after posting a bunch of Qanon drivel: “Imagine a world where people cared about child trafficking as much as they care about Tiktok.”

My response: “Imagine a world where people actually did something about child trafficking instead of just posting derisive memes on social media. Here’s a great place to start: Ways to Help | Save the Children

I woke up the next day to paragraph-long text messages ranting about how she’s a big girl who doesn’t need my approval and how dare I question her commitment to child welfare.

For context, she’s a graphic designer who has done zero for this cause outside of retweeting misinformation. I’m incredibly sick of Qanon disinformation muddying the waters of real trafficking-prevention efforts, so I might be overly-triggered and subsequently punching down for no benefit.

ETA: Obviously the answer is to stay off social media. My current usage is <1 hour/week and trending to zero. I’m on it.

Eh I think it’s fine, the whole child trafficking thing is just a way for them to try to paper over other causes IMO. They’re like why are you talking about racism when all these kids being trafficked, same for literally anything else. It’s an easy way for them to feel like they are in favor of something good and not have to worry about the actual problems of society. Obviously there is some trafficking but we have law enforcement for that, tons of social media posts about it aren’t doing shit.

I suppose you could ask her how she, as a paragon of commitment to child welfare, feels about kids in cages.
