Dealing with Deplorable Family and Friends

Trump isn’t moving to the left of the Democrats intentionally. He’s just button-mashing.

The problem isn’t that Democrats are letting Trump outflank them to the left. The problem is that Democrats have always been risk-averse. They are less reluctant to go to war, but once we get stuck in a war, they tend to stay the course. They are reluctant to try new electoral strategies. Dems are MUBSy weak-tight players in the political game.

Meaningless word though, people like Hillary Clinton are routinely described as “progressive” and insofar as the word can be defined it frequently has more to do with social policy. “Progressive” is a poor predictor of whether someone supports NAFTA or unionism, for example. “Socialist” has been co-opted to describe the anti-neoliberal left more broadly, in the absence of any other word.

I actually like Warren’s “I’m a capitalist” schtick and would probably gaslight with that while pushing my extreme socialist agenda. Because fuck everyone that’s why. Might even say I’m the most capitalist person that ever lived or a “supercapitalist” (shoutout to HRC) or whatever.

I’m so capitalist I only write sentences with one letter. I’m so capitalist my shift key is soldered directly to the board. I’m so capitalist I believe in a woman’s right to choose.

Tell those to your dumb relatives.

i walked into the living room to catch my trump voting roommate watching the clip of rep. Katie Porter locking down the CDC guy to give free testing, nodding his head along with her talking.

Found out Yesterday my alt right brother is a Q follower.

Was just begging me to watch the video below, it has every conspiracy trope possible from the last ten years.

Oh and his predictions below…

Your brother is not only a horrible person but very very very very stupid. Sorry, man.

So if the coronavirus is going to lead to a gold backed currency, does that mean it’s part of “the storm” that they’ve been talking about since 2015?

I also just love how a gold backed currency is always just around the corner with these types.

LOL a gold backed currency. This is going to lead to a massive devaluation of the USD. What is with conspiritards obsession with gold? (Don’t respond I get that they didn’t like leaving it and rant endlessly about conspiracies at the federal reserve and that their favorite smart people words are ‘fiat currency’)

God fucking damn do I hate gold bugs. I’ll happily admit that I’ve enjoyed watching Gold fall along with stocks as investors look for actual safety.

So FB is calling out blatant fake news, twitter is at least trying to suppress dangerous coronavirus disinformation, medium took down that hysteria article the derposphere was in love with - but youtube is gonna just keep on indoctrinating people into dangerous cults?

Cool cool.

Anyone who wants to go back to the gold standard is automatically an idiot in my book. This is part of why I hate bitcoin and crypto so much. That’s basically the new things for gold bugs, where bitcoin is an attempt to create digital gold that they hope can be like a new standard. That’s why they use the analogy of mining.

Fiat money forever!

Haha he actually told me for the coming recession I should buy gold and other metals.

Some of the people on this forum think you’re trolling them because of your usage of certain terms… but those people haven’t spent enough time arguing with those people to realize that you very clearly hate them, and very clearly are using those words on purpose to annoy said people.

I get what you’re doing and I approve of it. I’ve been known to call myself a statist from time to time as well.

Trump isn’t outflanking anyone to the left. Quit saying that! He just had a national press conference where he said all the dirty plebs need to get back to work and risk a miserable death suffocating in your own bodily fluids so that the ownership class doesn’t suffer too much, rather than, you know, calling for a long overdue strengthening of our social safety nets.

dems are doing absolute nothing like negotiating green new deal stuff instead of presenting a united front against republicans that literally want to kill us for the markets

nothing to flank really

media isn’t even covering bernie

I didn’t post this but someone I know did

CANNOT FIND ANY CONFIRMATION OF THIS…

My response…

You really tried to look for confirmation of this? Even in Trump world I thought this was obvious parody. The fact you thought this might be real, and you actually needed to look this up should speak volumes

WOULD NOT SAID I COULD FIND NO CONFIRMATION IF I HAD NOT CHECKED CHARLIE… AM NOT ACCUSTOMED TO LYING…AND YOUR COMMENT SAYS A LOT ABOUT YOU!!!

Alright at this point I am ready to crowdsource this shit. I promise this person is 100% real.

They’re lost. Just make fun of them until you feel better. Start with, “you might be the stupidest mofo I’ve ever interacted with, and I know inso”

So, had a long conversation with my mom tonight. She lives like 500+ miles away so we FaceTime for like an hour a week. As more backstory from the OP- She went from college dropout single mom of 2 to CEO of a 1000+ person organization.

There’s the right way, wrong way, and her way. There is zero doubt that I’d be the person I made it to today without that personality in my life. She’s a fucking rock.

We were talking about the stimulus packages. She was lamenting how ridiculous it was that some Democrats wanted to give people $2k a month for 6 months (married couples $4k). She was saying how incredulous it was that people could be just given that much money and “won’t you think of the debt.”

I never do this in my talks with her but I asked her to think about the former single working mom of two making $30k a year with a literal hole in her car’s floors asking her kids in the backseat to make sure their feet are raised when they go over a bump - if those folks deserve a break. She deflected and tried to make the argument of “well you had that upbringing and now are much more well off for it, why should you have to pay for it now”.

And that’s the moral of the story ladies and gentlemen. No matter how much it sucks for others, unless it’s directly affecting you at this moment and someone else gets a benefit, it’s wrong. That’s simply all there is to it.

oh and the racism

One of my favorite internet responses:

u/hectorgrey123 politely explains why, as a disabled person, they cannot support small-c conservative ideology that aims to punish people who through no fault of their own are less able to contribute to the economy, no matter how kind individual conservative people may be.

I am going to assume that you’re a generally decent sort of person, like the majority of people in this country. I’m going to assume that, ultimately, you want what is best for as many people as possible, while causing as little suffering as possible.

The thing you need to understand is that for the people who came up with conservativism in the first place, this was always the end goal. This is not some aberration, this is what conservativism always and inexorably leads to. This is your ideology when it stops pretending to give a shit what other people think of it.

I cannot, therefore, make a distinction between conservatives and Conservatives. As a disabled person, I can’t afford to. While I am sure you’d be perfectly nice to me in person, and would probably offer help when I appeared to need it, your political ideology demands that as someone less able to contribute economically, I suffer in order to reduce the burden placed upon the wealthiest in society. Ultimately, you did this.

There is definitely a thread of “If I suffered you should too” to go along with the - only care it if affects me personally thing.
