If it infuriates conservatives then I love it. Make their kids read the Koran, too.
Muslims and Somalis have taken over and are holding you white Christians hostage in Minneapolis? Is that what that meme is supposed to imply there?
Close!
More like religious extremists have taken over the city council.
Better luck next time!!
You’re calling them extremists because they want the same right to practice their crazy beliefs that other crazy people have?
You sound like a xenophobe.
In addition to giving your ears freedom from religion, do you want them to built giant fences around churches so that your eyes can have freedom of religion?
Religious extremism is allowing a muezzin? Thats a very low bar
It’d definitely get old at the end of June when the days are like 18 hours long. I think the restrictions of not before 7 AM were reasonable. But if Minneapoliseans are ok with it then who cares I guess.
Not sure if this constitutes “crazy”, but it is religious and the ruling could have a pretty big impact on religious expression cases in the future.
Cliffs: guy starts working for the post office at a time when Sunday work was not required. At some point, USPS signs a contract with Amazon that requires Sunday deliveries, and he is scheduled to work Sundays. He tells his manager that he can’t work on the Lord’s Day, boss finds replacements sometimes, but eventually says that the office is too short staffed to allow him to take off every Sunday. Employee is now suing for religious discrimination.
Being a member of a religion shouldn’t impart you any special rights. I lived in the vicinity of a few churches in my lifetime and the bells are annoying as fuck. Some of us like to sleep in on a Sunday. Then there are the clocks that chime every 15 minutes and for the full hour.
This should never be allowed.
Complete coincidence that the pirate is Somali, Jaylani Hussein is Somali, and Minneapolis is the center of the Somali population in the US? You just thought “religious extremist takeover? That reminds me of the Somali pirate meme!”.
It sounds worse than it is. I slept through that shit after I adjusted no problem.
Doesn’t seem like they’re enough mosques in Minny that the calls to prayer will overlap each other and sound out of sync. That’s hard to handle no matter how familiar you are with it
Seems like it’s a trivial accommodation to just move him to a different shift? I don’t buy for a minute that it’s an undue burden on USPS to have him swap days with a different guy. Hot take: maybe USPS shouldn’t have signed that Sunday delivery contract with Amazon if they’re too short-staffed to deal with minor shit like this?
Yeah, I think that is basically my take as well. Especially since the Sunday work was a new thing for the entire office, it seems like they would have to be changing schedules/staffing anyway and could have found a way to accomodate him. I actually have a lot of sympathy for his specific case, but a little concerned about how the implications of the case might be applied to other scenarios, so I’ll be interested to read the SCOTUS opinion when it drops.
I can believe it to be non-trivial if he works at an office with only four carriers.
Meanwhile if an atheist said “I also want Sunday off to practice my religion” they’d be fired and laughed out of court. No one should be forced to work Sundays, especially if the joined the job back when there wasn’t a Sunday requirement. Fuck that contract with Amazon.
Sundays aren’t any different than other days though, right?
It’s not quite like it used to be when tons of things were closed on Sundays. When I was a kid it would have been easier to list businesses that were open on Sunday as opposed to those that weren’t. But still government stuff at least is closed - and like you aren’t allowed to do construction work on Sundays in most places. It’s one of those things where you live in a Christian society, but you think it’s just “society” the way they say fish don’t recognize the water or something. If you’re not Christian (really not Christian - culturally as well as any faith or lack of faith) and have a bit of a chip on your shoulder it’s something that you notice.
I heard Republicans love right-to-work laws. Does that mean I could get a job at Chick-Fil-A and sue them for not letting me work on Sundays?
Eh I’m operating under the assumption that Sunday is different from other days because it’s important to some religions, but you shouldn’t have to be religious to get it off. I guess you could say no one should be forced to work on any day and I’d probably agree with that.
