COVID-19: Chapter 9 - OMGicron

Covid paper with a pretty wild myocarditis claim for boys retracted. The reason is fucking ridiculous:

During the process of open peer review on MedRxiv we quickly received a number of messages from reviewers concerned that there was a problem with our reported incidence of myocarditis post mRNA vaccination. Our reported incidence appeared vastly inflated by an incorrectly small denominator (ie number of doses administered over the time period of the study). We reviewed the data available at Open Ottawa and found that there had indeed been a major underestimation, with the actual number of administered doses being more than 800,000 (much higher than quoted in the paper).

In order to avoid misleading either colleagues or the general public and press, we the authors unanimously wish to withdraw this paper on the grounds of incorrect incidence data. We thank the many peer reviewers who went out of their way to contact us and point out our error. We apologize to anyone who may have been upset or disturbed by our report.

In summary, the authors have withdrawn this manuscript because of a major error pertaining to the quoted incidence data. Therefore, the authors do not wish this work to be cited as reference for the project. If you have any questions, please contact the corresponding author.

Whoops! Left out a zero or 2!

So not only did we not compare it to the correct control group (kids that got Covid) we overestimated the incidence by orders of magnitude.

Oops.

But I may better than even money odds that the next time a seemingly unposssible result is reported ……

I am sure that the Do Your Own Researchers over at Facebook University with methodically take down all the misinformation the spread around this and apologize.

Goddammit

I know it’s just a matter of weeks, but October vs. November availability is probably going to determine if we see family at Thanksgiving.

November makes end of year holidays dicey depending on availability/when in November/if its the same dosing cadence.

Was hoping for a more “normal” holiday this year, but likely a '22 event

Got this from a client today.

Hi Team,

Due to my heart condition I am not vaccinated. Sorry for the inconvenience and inability to audition for “vaccination required only” projects.

Sending you all my best and will test and comply as I have before if any productions permit 🙌🏼

Sincerely in health and happiness,

It must be that devious kind of heart condition where the vaccine is more dangerous than getting the virus itself. Tough break!

Unreported brag. Your family seems to like each other.

(Yeah I’d be pissed if I were you).

My stepmother passed away today from covid, she had a pre-existing heart condition and was unvaxxed. Thinking there couldn’t possibly be a real heart condition where getting vaxxed isn’t the right thing to do.

I’m genuinely sorry for what’s happened to your family… but I don’t think there is a heart condition that would make this position valid

I’m sorry for your family and for what your dad is going to go through losing his companion.

Have you seen any changes in attitudes of the people close to her, or anyone who might have been convinced to get vaccinated because of this tragedy?

my step sister (deceased’s daughter) is a conspiracy theorist with an MBA who got her first shot two weeks ago. Unsure if it was because of her mother or she would have lost her job if she didn’t.

Everyone else I know other than my wife’s sister and her fiancee are vaxxed.

What do you mean? I said there wasn’t probably a heart condition where getting vaxxed wasn’t the preferable option. Were you agreeing or disagreeing with me?

I also misinterpreted what you were saying. Think you guys are in agreement.

Yeah there was a fairly unclear double negative but youre both saying the same thing.

Sorry! I thought you meant the opposite.

Quick COVID trip report from Tokyo & Yokohama Japan.

First time back here in civilization in 6 months. Well over half the population now vaccinated.

Still, near 100% mask wearing,

Cafes, restaurants, Indoor public places: all masks. Only exception is when eating. Once eating is done, it’s mask back on for conversations.

Outside walking the streets or in the parks, even when there aren’t many people around: masks.

All voluntary. No mandates. No complaining. No conspiracy theories.

Just a population of people doing what they can to deal with and get past this thing.

Booster shot scheduled for Friday morning. Have the next day off too in case it sucks

Wife and I just got booster’d today. Pretty simple and painless, though I did forget my vax card and may need to run it back down there for them to update.
