Nah, their numbers strain all credibility. This was spreading well before anyone knew it was out there, they didn’t lockdown until after a major travel holiday, and somehow the virus was immediately contained miraculously.
My worry is that the mortality rate is going to go up due to
-overwhelmed healthcare system
-less sophisticated care in rural settings
-demographics as it goes into more olds
-possible increase in viral dosing due to more time indoors
-also possible testing doesn’t keep up and the cfr climbs some
If ifr stays down then 2,000/day max assuming behavior eventually responds even absent mandates.
You should check out Intelligent Design. No spoilers, but I think you’re going to love it.
I don’t think that saying that no one else would have contained it is some sort of defense of China. It’s highly infectious and to them it was new. Your contention that “many did” is flawed for several reasons.
-
If you look at the countries that you have listed that are successful, you’ve got 3 island nations (one of which is fairly remote) and Vietnam. Smaller islands have a natural advantage, hence it’s not a valid comparison.
-
It’s true that these countries eventually contained it. But did they contain and stamp it out before any cases got out. That’s far from certain. If they controlled it after some cases got out, then how is that different from what China did?
-
The virus was new to China. By the time it got elsewhere it was less new, so every subsequent country had an advantage that China did not.
China did a lot of stuff wrong and their government is evil in a lot of ways. No one disputes that. You can even blame their poor regulatory environment for fostering the development of the virus. Have at it.
But to suggest that if this outbreak had happened somewhere else, then it quite possibly would have been contained within that country is a massive stretch.
I think it will be too. Seems logical that the Winter cold and flu season is going to ramp up covid cases enormously. What we’ve seen so far could be mild in comparison. I don’t see how baseball, basketball and hockey can start up normally again under those circumstances. Plus more personal plans will have to be canceled. Not to mention the deaths and overwhelmed hospitals. Maybe then, people will start to listen to the experts, and maybe the politicians will get on the same page (no chance of that if Trump is re-elected).
Yes. The alarm bells have been ringing here for at least a month.
Wow this thread has aids.
SARS-CoV2 did not arise from a simple mutation. It was a recombination event in zoological host.
No one has published anything at finding known restrictions enzyme or crisper like sequences. Everything this does can be readily described by nature. That’s the Occam’s razor here.
As a resident science bro, I’m asking a mod to excise this part as needed and ban anyone arguing in bad faith. Ok to speculate but saying that there is scientific evidence is very much like ID arguments.
Trump allowing Covid to rampage unabated will be the lasting legacy of an eventfully horrible term.
He will do it out of spite once he loses and fight restricrions tooth and nail in the lame duck.
Ugh. Grunching. But a wet market is just a market. They are super common everywhere across Asia and no body is going to shut them down.
Conflating those with exotic animal markets is just poorly informed. Especially 11 months into this thing.
My team was in China. They locked down hard in January and weren’t allowed to go to the office and could barely leave the house.
It’s not “miraculous”…if you cut off almost all interaction between people, the virus can’t spread very much
The White House will be way to busy committing crimes to cover up the crimes they have already committed to care about what is going on in the country. Shredding, bribing, blackmailing, everyone trying to cover there ass, its going to be a horror show.
I can’t even imagine the mess the transition team will have to deal with.
Please and thank you!!!
This was starting to feel like 2+2 for a minute.
Semantics. China has been dangerously irresponsible even though scientists have been warning about these exotic animal markets since before SARS.
To follow up on the Halloween discussion, I asked the mom who acts as the street captain of sorts (who’s also as progressive as they come for suburban mom) and the street has agreed to setup goodie bags at the end of each driveway. Obviously this is super privileged and lucky to live in an area that takes this seriously. Just happy to bring a bit of joy to the little one as I’m sure everyone will be masked up and distancing even with it being outside like that.
It’s not just sars, there’s several bird flu outbreaks linked to asian wet markets too
They have almost 20% of the worlds population. A lot of disease would be expected to come from China.
I’m not an expert here, but I can think of precisely one pandemic that didn’t come from China (MERS) or an asian wet market like Hong Kong (which wasn’t china then but is now). They are way over-represented, and we have a reason for it that has been demonstrated throughout history: wet markets.
If you’re going to make an assertion that it’s due to population, you should attempt to actually support it.
My bad. I meant it isn’t an argument of incredulity. It’s definitely an argument from ignorance. We’re ALL ignorant about this virus
Most countries in the world have “wet” markets. Source: I’ve traveled extensively.
