COVID-19: Chapter 6 - ThanksGRAVING

Yup it’s weird. The problem is that n is so high that superspreaders could be 5% of events but 50% of transmissions. (Totally made up round numbers just for example).

Multi-party systems are good because in order for the government to function, parties are required to form a coalition that can net them at least 50% of the vote. This means that they need to compromise on their positions to form a more moderate platform. Theoretically, that keeps a government from moving to one extreme or another. The extremist parties who refuse to compromise will never join a coalition and will also be unlikely to get an absolute majority to do as they please. Obviously, this doesn’t always work. Hungary is a great example of this failing.

As for Babis, he’s shit at creating a coalition. He lost a vote of no confidence after failing to create one but refused to resign, instead getting the president to twist the arm of his former party to join a coalition with ANO. The two parties that formed a coalition with ANO got mauled in this month’s election. Next October is going to be very interesting and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Babis resign because nobody will form a coalition with him after watching what happened to his supporting parties.

The government not functioning here would be a feature not a bug to most on the right. I mean thats been McConnels entire goal the last 10 years aside from some tax cuts but they’re probably low enough now that they could keep funding from corporations to prevent them from getting higher. I just don’t see it working in America.

I get you though, there are a lot of benefits if your population isn’t completely insane.

My suspicion is that a parliamentary government in the US would moderate politics similarly to how it does so in Israel.

I honestly have no idea. There’s no historical precedent for imposing a parliamentary system onto a two-party system with immediate effect. A lot of Americans don’t even know their current government works let alone a parliamentary system.

i would not categorize israeli politics as moderate. certainly not compared to usa in any era other than trmp.

That is my point.

I had a very interesting Covid experience yesterday and I guess I figured I would share it because there has been very little talk here about the impact Covid is having on those of us taking it seriously. I’ve even seen people post that Americans are soft for not being able to handle indefinite interruption to regular life.

I’m in a two attorney law firm and my law partner and I are pretty good friends but our relationship is more driven by commonality than an extremely deep relationship. By that I mean we love having a few drinks and shooting the shit but very very rarely ever have what I would call a deep conversation. 95% of our conversations are about sports or politics or whatever.

Anyways, he has taken Covid as seriously as I have, maybe more seriously. It has obviously affected our social lives, our normal activities and our business has suffered along with most others. Yesterday he basically broke down to me and said he wasn’t doing ok. The indefiniteness of the entire thing was killing him and he wanted to know if I thought he should go talk to someone. My response was to basically tell him that I am feeling exactly the same way. That I have been self medicating with alcohol. That I am depressed. That I am totally sick of my life right now. That I am angry with all the shidiots who are selfish and making this worse at our expense.

All that to say I think we need to be more supportive to the people in our lives taking this seriously. We are all hurting. I need to stop treating it like an expectation of people with only my wrath if you violate it and start being supportive of the people in my life who are actually trying to do their best to stop the spread. It has been a grueling 7 months and literally just hearing I wasn’t alone in my suffering helped. It has been hard with 85% of people going back to normal to not feel the scorn every time someone asked me to do something and I said no for Covid reasons. It has been hard to see those invitations slowly stop as time has gone on.

So for all of you who have sacrificed for the greater good I appreciate you. For the benefits to my health and the health of my family and friends that I have earned through your hard work I appreciate you. You deserve more appreciation than you have gotten.

Totally normal to feel this way. I’m doing pretty well aside from Trump and not working much. My wife is going stir crazy. Not so much with the day to day but with ever growing realization that 2021 will require more isolation. She really enjoyed taking the train into Philly most days. Thank goodness her main client firm relies heavily on video for interactions.

Hang in there. We are in a marathon and the hills really suck. But eventually we will get through this.

I think feeling this way is normal. i had a really hard time a few months ago. was really frustrated and angry all the time.

Then someone on here mentioned playing disc golf, which I’d played a few times before, so we got some discs and played a local course and we were terrible, but we had fun. so now we play 3-4 times a week. a lot of time on the weekends we’ll drive to a nearby course and pick up take out for lunch.

we were having a hard time not having anything to look forward to, and everyday kind of being the same day everyday. just being able to have some variety and little day trips has helped my mental wellbeing a ton.

we also booked an airbnb with a pool in another town like 20 minutes from our house to have a weekend away. it was great, almost no covid exposure and a chance to decompress and break the monotony.

i was making the mistake of thinking that if life couldn’t be how it was, then I couldn’t do anything, and then we just started making adjustments finding new things that brought us enjoyment.

Mr Lt Gov of Alabama (the committee does not give a shot what your name is) come on down!

You are the next nominee

The numbers are insanely high today. If we don’t break the all time record of 78,971(Worldometers) today or tomorrow we are getting damn close.

2nd wave?

US garph looking a little ruski or Peruvian

Countries with a (real) lockdown…

Tsunami

The idea is you save a few lives inbetween the ‘waves’

Whereas USA likes the more continual Tsunami wave - doesn’t fluctuate much in a downwards direction, just keeps plowing thru’

It’s still the first wave

No I get that obviously but the idea a lot of average people likely have is that spending 14 minutes with an unlimited number of randoms is safe.
