COVID-19: Chapter 6 - ThanksGRAVING

Well everyone in my family has officially “recovered” at this point. Still having some post viral fatigue and issues but that’s to be expected.

We ended up having 22 positives and 5 deaths between my wife’s family and mine. Just shitty all around

Hopefully the final damage for that dude on Chiefsplanet. You have to wonder how many rural families out there are getting hit like this - in the land of true believers and a ton of obesity and other health problems.

The WHO’s SOLIDARITY trial for COVID drug effectiveness has reported some interim results. This is a large randomized trial of 11,266 people in total. The trial tested hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir, interferon-beta and remdesivir. In contrast to the earlier ACT-1 trial, this trial found that remdesivir was ineffective. The authors wrote:

This absolutely excludes the suggestion that Remdesivir can prevent a substantial fraction of all deaths. The confidence interval is comfortably compatible with prevention of a small fraction of all deaths, but is also comfortably compatible with prevention of no deaths.

The study also found that all the other options tested were also ineffective. They are now dropping further study of these drugs and moving on to things like dexamethasone and some monoclonal antibodies, which as we saw in the case of your big wet President recently, have some promise.

… which gets a D, until the student’s mom comes in and Karens it up until little Johnny gets at least a B.

When this happens here I’m going to go on life tilt. Like after a year of taking it seriously, not even seeing my parents inside without masks unless we did a 2-week quarantine or got tested, avoiding stores at all costs, missing 95% of my work opportunities, and being 100% mask compliant… All so assholes could go to bars, make out with strangers, and watch football games…

I’ll have to forego my outdoor distanced socializing with my parents and my buddy and his wife, because all the assholes had to do their partying and drinking… Only for them to immediately go back to doing the same as soon as they shutdown ends, once again freeloading.

God, being single in a pandemic blows. Fuck all the freeloaders. Same assholes who won’t support single payer, better unemployment, etc because they hate freeloaders.

Fuck them fuck them fuck them.

I ordered a fire pit table for my deck today. Propane fueled, so it’s not a significant fire risk, and it generates 50,000 BTUs. It’s also 32 inches on each side, so if we sit on the corners and stay about a foot back from the table, we’ll automatically be six feet apart.

Plus the heat should automatically pull a decent amount of our exhalation up and help the wind take it away.

I’m guessing it’ll be comfortable enough if the outdoor temperature is 30+, and I plan on figuring out some hot alcoholic beverages to enjoy.

I’ve been sleeping with the windows open and ceiling fan on since March. Should I still keep the windows open an inch or 2 all winter? I don’t want to breathe recycled air if possible. I live in TN so nights will be in 20s and 30s for most part.

I’ve definitely dealt with my share of depression and loneliness, especially the 3-6 months after moving (and I’ve moved a lot). My father and I didn’t discuss that explicitly very much, but he always visited a lot in those times and it made a huge difference for me.

I’m sure you being there for your son was a huge boost for his mental state. Good fathering!

Those are big for me too. Personally I don’t think you can just work on shyness, for me it’s usually caused by underlying feelings/fears. For example I’ve gone on TV and radio to 10s of thousands of people with no issue, I’m super talkative at a poker table, and I can make conversation when I’m introduced to someone or it’s expected. If I’m supposed to address a room because I’m in a leadership position, giving a toast, whatever, that is pretty easy.

But put me in a spot where it’s strangers in a social setting, or a woman I like, and it’s a struggle - the outcome of which is almost always related to how I feel about my appearance, how much self-confidence I have, etc.

Obviously lots of people might be the opposite, so my point in this case is just that the solution may be something underlying the shyness.

You have roommates or something, right?

Wasnt the initial positive study on remdesivir linked to shorter duration of illness in recovered patients, rather than improved mortality?

It might still be useful in that regard.

Yep that is me. I remember giving a talk in front a few hundred and being completely fine with it because I expected a few hundred. Gave a talk in front of 36 or so when I was expecting 6…and was a mess. Get me one on one…complete mess.

Yea I’m staying at a buddy’s house. He doesn’t really take precautions. His bedroom is on otherside of the house.

Being stuck with your partner 24/7 during lockdown isn’t great either as many on this forum can attest to I’m sure!

I mean you are likely taking on most of your risk in the daytime in common areas or being in the same room, anyway, unless you’re wearing a mask at all times.

I would think it’d be important that the cold air not be right on top of you while you’re sleeping, because I’m pretty sure that’s not great for your immune system anyway. I know it would cause me issues, but a lot of that is because of asthma.

Maybe if you’re going to do it, get a space heater?

I’d snap make the trade with the right partner, but I’m sure there are bad days and fights and all.

By the way this is my reminder to everyone to get your flu shot if you haven’t already. Don’t be freeloading off my achey arm/neck and my immunity!!!

That’s a good idea. I’ll get a space heater. I actually try to avoid staying in same room with him for more than an hour or so. The chair I sit in is about 10 feet away. I wasn’t too concerned in the summer because windows were open and fans were going. But with the colder weather, I know the heat will be on and the air will be recycled.

The German government is investing €500m (£452m; $488m) in improving ventilation systems in public buildings to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

The grants will go to improve the air circulation in public offices, museums, theatres, universities and schools. Private firms are not yet eligible.

It seems like the lesson we learned from the summer wave was that we could do nothing or very little different and it would eventually burn itself out some. I realize most places did mask mandates this summer and that probably had an impact. I am pretty fearful that is going to make us wait way way too long to do anything this time around.

My social anxiety is similar. I’m ok giving presentations, officiating weddings in front of hundreds, or giving speeches.

Talking to strangers terrifies me though. I forget names really easily and I’m terrified of forgetting someone’s name too.

I know it’s “in my head”’ and not logical but damn it feels real.
