Yeah LA Times is pretty annoying in this regard. For days: “California is about to pass New York as the most covid cases.” Then today: “California now now has the most covid cases.” Ok. But now do per capita, and what’s our trajectory, etc. So useless.
Seems to be a march toward mandatory masks. Ohio tonight. Indiana on Monday. Absolutely criminal these guys waited for Trump to signal it was OK.
I totally agree - that’s why I used the population-adjusted graph just a bit earlier in the thread.
But it’s also understandable that people are looking at sites like United States COVID - Coronavirus Statistics - Worldometer that present information on a state-level basis, and then get interested in predicting state-level numbers.
If we look at unadjusted numbers, big states obviously stand out:
Same graph using per-capita numbers of cases is what I posted earlier, and the one I think is most informative:
It really depends on what you’re trying to accomplish.
That may help some. My personal take is that most people aren’t getting infected at the grocery store though. If they were then we wouldn’t have gotten case numbers down back in April when stores were open with no mask mandate and very low mask compliance. They get infected at bars, family get togethers, etc. Mask compliance at those events will be next to nothing. People don’t wear masks in restaurants and bars really either and these mask mandates don’t require them for obvious reasons. Then you have 30% of the population who thinks they are the mark of the beast and refuse to wear them no matter what.
So in general I think the mask mandates matter some but ignore the real problem and reality of where people are getting infected.
Counterpoint. Public transport.
Melbourne mask adoption on Public transport the few times I’ve caught it was MUCH higher post mandate.
For public transport I think it probably matters a ton. So I agree with you there. Most American cities have very little public transit though compared to similar cities abroad.
And just to be clear I am obviously 100% pro-mask mandate. I am just very doubtful that alone will do the trick in USA #1.
My city’s trying to implement a $100 mask fine but afaik no one’s actually been cited.
“It is what it is.” What an asshole. We’re so used to the insanity, every now and then I try to put it into perspective.
Imagine if the manager of a sporting goods store like let some teenage workers do target practice with their guns/ammo, leaving some propane tanks out behind what they were shooting at… Thus leading to an explosion, a fire, a few dead workers, a few dead customers… Then they go to the owner and they’re like, “Hey, it is what it is.”
Next thing you know, people are going to want jobs without getting pozzed first to build up their immunity. How do you expect to get hired in a pandemic if they think you might have to miss work when you get sick??? Silly liberals!
Jesus there’s a lot of JAQing off there.
This might be the only part I’d even bother responding to… "If we could test everyone every day, you could skip the mask if you were negative and willing to take the risk on your own. Since some asshole can’t manage to expand testing capacity in the GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD YAY USA#1 unfortunately that’s not an option. Since we don’t know who has it and who does not, we all have to wear a mask to be safe.
He’s at such a level of nonsense and conspiratorial bullshit, it’s not even worth discussing.
Do Russians falling out of windows count as covid?
Yes I concur as noted masks are really important for long interval public spaces like public transport, offices etc (lol offices as noted by several here).
Partying has to be #1 for community spread followed by ordinary dining and church. (Outside of artificial concentration like meat plants prisons and nursing homes). And lol masks at church. Jeebus will protect us.
My cousins, aunt and uncle got theirs even though they weren’t symptomatic.
Being a millionaire has its benefits.
Or they’re astroturfers who don’t believe what they say at these town hall meetings.
I went to look at a rental house today, they had people lined up to look at it one after another and had purposely left not quite enough time so that you’d run into the other people to add some pressure. The ones before me were masked up, so I go in, the woman is wearing a mask. She struggles to hear something I said and pulls her mask down off her nose to start complaining about masks. I just give her a look and start backing away slowly, as if there’s a rattlesnake in the room or something.
I look around, go outside to check out the yard (and take my mask off once outside). She takes hers off. She goes back in to look at the application, I pop back in to check on one more thing (mask back on obviously). She’s in there no mask, just spreading that COVID-breath around. I get back out in under 60 seconds.
Hopefully I wasn’t pozzed by, “I hate masks cause I can’t hear people talk,” lady.
Manhattan Beach has a $100 fine. They have fined some people in crowded places - joggers on the strand.
Yea I’m in costa mesa but I think there is significantly less political will here for the fine. The PD and city hall are constantly at odds with each other.
Many jurisdictions and states have had law enforcement come out and flat say they weren’t enforcing it. OKC PD did this as well as Wichita and Arkansas police just off the top of my head. I have to imagine actual enforcement is non-existent in most of the country.
There’s been controversy here too. Lots of strong feelings on both sides. A movement on one side to recall the councilperson who voted against it and on the other side to raise a statue in the town square in her honor. I don’t think the police are keen on giving these tickets and maybe the community patrol semi-cops are doing it.
Seriously one of the most triggering phrases of my life.
“If you think about it…”
I already have. What now?
“Well if you think about it like this, you’ll agree with me.”
Not enough lols in the world for people who conflate “this doesn’t make sense to me” with “I’m confused, therefore this is wrong.”
A few thoughts:
-
The feds are still mostly teleworking when possible. Given what a big employer it is, keeping all of those people out of offices and away from rush hour commutes on the Metro has to play a big role in keeping SDI in a good place.
-
Restaurants and bars have reopened but with restricted capacity and we’ve taken steps to make outdoor dining easier. Anecdotally, I know a lot of places that would not be able to provide outdoor seating options have simply decided to either not open up, or stick to carry out only.

One theory that I have been chewing on recently is that while density is probably a net negative overall, being really dense actually has some advantages in controlling the spread. I couldn’t have a large gathering at my house right now because the building management would squash it. My HOA (like most apartments/condos in the city) has rules requiring masks in common areas, so I am always wearing one. I think this probably leads to greater overall compliance because it becomes routine just like I make sure I have my wallet and keys.

Our testing numbers do look pretty good, but cases are inching up. Anecdotally, more of my friends are starting to venture out, especially to beach areas in Florida and North Carolina, so I’m hoping that we can keep R just below 1 and that things don’t go completely sideways when the Feds OFB.
The ones who don’t believe it are the ones making money off of the ones that do. Does Ben Garrison, Ann Coulter etc believe everything they put out? Of course not. Do the people consuming them? Unfortunately they really do.
I actually don’t know where I’d find QAnon and shit like that.
And I’m grateful because I’d probably lose my mind if I did.
The inch up is pretty similar to most places’ phase 1s. I won’t begin being alarmed until tests are lower and cases are consistently above 100 per day. Regardless of whether it’s right or wrong, I want to see a higher test percentage than case percentage increase. Based on what I saw in goofy’s latest numbers, it looks like test results are returning outside of the 7DMA explaining some of the rise that seems higher than testing. Of course rises look bigger when they’re starting from a small place. Based on your anecdotes, it would seem any changes are due to tourism because SDI has only lowered negligibly. Is tourism happening on any scale there? Thanks for reporting on this.
As an aside, Puerto Rico has exploded in cases over the last two weeks. I think it’s due to testing but their reporting is an absolute cluster. They used to only report new cases. Then they reported a number for tests fairly recently but it hasn’t moved for several days while the new cases keep going up.
Edited to add that I forgot to ask you when D.C. started reopening?
