Story checks out. My wife got exposed at work accidentally two weeks ago and the hospital wouldn’t test her. She had to go to CVS for a test lol.

It’s really amazing how much the rest of the country now contrasts with NY (maybe the whole northeast I don’t know). Like, we’re begging people to get tested. We have a massive number of drive-in testing sites all over the state open 7 days a week where you can call and get scheduled for a test like an hour later and wait 5 minutes in your car. We really need to petition Canada to annex us or something.

Fucking disgraceful. Like 30 million people are drawing unemployment, the CARES Act runs out in a few weeks, and we’re really just gearing up to evict millions, in the middle of a pandemic no less.

NY passed a law yesterday effective immediately that nobody can be evicted for nonpayment of rent who is suffering from financial hardship because of COVID for as long as the COVID crisis lasts. Prior to that evictions had been paused since March via Cuomo’s executive order. So there’s that.

Some relatively smart people in some Discord group I belong to were going on the other day about “hell no am I not going to be a guinea pig for whatever they come up with”. I was trying to explain it’s probably gonna be just the opposite, like they’re gonna be doing so much testing that people are gonna be like “ffs release it already, how many trials do you need to do!”

But nope, these people who should know better insist they’ll wait at least a year after it’s publicly available or maybe more.

I mean, if they put it out tomorrow I would wait to take it. I want to see what Fauci and some independent doctors/scientists say, but assuming they are confident in the safety, obviously I will be rushing to take it.

From what I gathered in this thread most experts said the earliest a vaccine could be available is in 18 months (correct me if I’m wrong). Trump claims one will be ready by January. I would be extremely hesitant to take a vaccine that was rushed thru in a short period of time and being pushed by this admin as safe

This I agree with, but if the number is 50% who will never take it, we’re really and truly fucked because it sounds like the vaccines are only expected to be about 75% effective. That means we need basically everyone to take it.

Yeah that’s fair. I’m going under the assumption that there aren’t gonna be shenanigans going on where Trump forces them to declare one of these safe and release it like a year earlier than it should be, then once he gets re-elected he DGAF if everybody’s kidneys fail 3 months later. It’s probably a stupid assumption.

Agreed. But for the whole month of May we nerds on UP were screaming at the top of our lungs that the decline in COVID cases nationwide was an illusion, since declines in NY/NJ masked slow growth everywhere else.

Now the same might be happening for deaths from what I can tell. Growth in hotspots still just looks like noise in the entire national picture, but it could come to dominate the national stats really soon.

Yeah I mostly agree. My friend from Houston today hit me with the “nobody in Houston saw this coming 6-8 weeks ago.” I bit my tongue, cause I warned him repeatedly 6-8 weeks ago. We didn’t speak from 5 weeks ago to a week ago because he got tired of it.

Basically he goes on to say that it’s possible regulators would accept an “emergency use” vaccine that showed solid evidence of safety in humans, efficacy in animals, evidence that that efficacy would betransferable to humans, but lacked a wide enough study to definitively prove efficacy in humans.

Definitive proof would take longer than the end of this / beginning of next year.

I’m less worried about proof it works in humans than I am about proof it’s safe in humans. We can be pretty confident it will work, and if it doesn’t, the worst case scenario is that we’re in the same spot we were in before. Judge your risk tolerance accordingly.

Texas can’t deny reality any longer, requiring masks statewide. I’d imagine that will break a damn for states requiring masks.

edit: this is basically my number one wish in the world, for personal reasons, so please read critically and tell me I should be more skeptical.

The main reason to be skeptical is that overall data about how many kids were infected or were the index patient for a household is pretty useless when the kids were done with school in like March. The main reason to be optimistic is the example of the kid exposing 80 other kids and none getting it. The question there is did none of them get it (like they were tested to confirm) or did none of them get symptoms (and they were never tested)?

This is definitely part of it, but the internet has also definitely broken these people in larger numbers and to a greater extent than ever before.

Edit: or as I think about it more, maybe the internet has just made the divide greater between those who are rational and capable of processing information and those who cannot and are driven to conspiracy theories and overconfidence in their own intelligence and capabilities.

I think it has just given them a sense of community and a knowledge that there are more of them out there, and there is safety in numbers. This, combined with Trump making their views socially acceptable nationally has been a horrible combination.

Apparently Pittsburgh is doing a one-week lockdown to cover themselves for Fourth of July weekend. Smart, but I’m sure the outrage will be massive and there will be plenty of house parties anyway.

I mean, we’re a ways out from this, but we’re going to have to pass a federal law mandating it and let the Supreme Court sort it out. The problem is, enforcing that would be extremely dystopian and make me deeply uncomfortable, but what the fuck are we supposed to do? Get ravaged by COVID-19 in perpetuity and be cut off from the global community because half of us are literally too stupid to know how to stay alive?

I don’t really get how the FDA is giving testimony to Congress and stuff about how relaxing the red tape and emergency approvals has been really helpful here.

Isn’t there, like, a pretty good reason why the regulations are in place? If we were able to get a vaccine into the hands of the general public in a year or whatever, wouldn’t that be a tacit admission that the current FDA approval processes are bad? I don’t really see how this is going to play out.
