oh, probably, but pretty much the only concerts I go to now (pre-COVID) are the ones I could kayak to.

It’s not just deplorable. It’s downright weird. How did this cult grow so large and how is it so pervasive?
I’m not young, and I cannot recall any other politician who “inspired” people to run up flags with their name on a flagpole right next to the US flag. Or have spontaneous (i.e. not planned by the campaign) parades and flotillas in their honor. There are a bunch in my development and it boggles my mind. I never saw a Bush flag, or Clinton, or Obama.
It’s just so fucking WEIRD.

So basically these people have always existed, but nobody ever pandered right at them and then won the presidency in modern history. Then came Trump. They’d never experienced a politician so in touch with their own id… but now that they’ve tried it they LOVE it.
In business it’s generally a good idea to create a product that is narrowly targeted towards one (large preferably) segment of the population. It’s fine if everyone not in that demographic hates it as long as one segment LOVES it. Every time you see something ugly in a store that very nearly offends you with its poor taste you’re experiencing being in the out demographic.
Some XX% number of Americans are straight up fascists. Literally authoritarian right. And Donald Trump is their AOC in terms of product-market fit.

She informed us today that they’d love to see us, but everyone in the family has come down with a bad cold.
Fuck. I love them and especially their son. I just hope if it’s corona (lol at this being anything but corona) that it’s mild and none of them gets deathly ill or worse. On the other hand, I am furious thinking of how many people they’ve likely infected.

My friend was shopping in a local grocery store and a lady got behind him in line with no mask (they’re required to wear masks inside) and he asked her what the fuck is she doing with no mask. She then proceeded to take out her phone to record him and started yelling at him I have a medical condition and your a sheep believing this virus is real and so on. My friend then calls her an idiot and she tells him “go back to your fucking country” (My friend was born here) in a store that caters to mostly immigrants (they carry a lot of items from other countries you can’t find at regular stores). Some nut jobs out there lol

This is definitely part of it, but the internet has also definitely broken these people in larger numbers and to a greater extent than ever before.
Edit: or as I think about it more, maybe the internet has just made the divide greater between those who are rational and capable of processing information and those who cannot and are driven to conspiracy theories and overconfidence in their own intelligence and capabilities.
