COVID-19: Chapter 4 - OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Given that breathing, fully alive US citizens can’t get a test without symtoms, I suspect (as you do) no dead people are being tested

Dr Fauci: US risks greater outbreak if latest surge not controlled

The top US expert in infectious diseases, Dr Anthony Fauci, has expressed his concern over the rise in coronavirus cases in the country, warning of the risk of a greater outbreak if the latest surge is not controlled.

“We got hit very badly, worse than any country, with regard to the number of cases and the number of deaths. The problem we’re facing now is that in an attempt to so-called reopen or open the government and get it back to some form of normality, we’re seeing very disturbing spikes in different individual states in the US,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“We’ve got to get that under control or we risk an even greater outbreak in the United States.”

Comparing the situation in the US to how some European countries controlled the spread of the virus, Dr Fauci said: "They closed down to the tune of about 97% lockdown. In the US, even in the most strict lockdown, only about 50% of the country locked down. That allowed the perpetuation of the outbreak."

“We need to engender some societal responsibility in people, particularly the younger people,” he explained, noting that young people were less likely to be seriously affected by Covid-19 but could still spread the disease.

The UK is seeing breakouts of covid in some towns, often in places you wouldn’t necessarily expect.

Leicester is a fairly average town in the middle of England mainly famous for perplexing American tourists with its spelling and pronunciation wrt Leicester Square in London :grinning:

Residents on a street cut in half by the Leicester lockdown boundary line have branded it “stupid”.

Some addresses on Bowhill Grove are now subject to the tighter restrictions introduced on Monday, while others are not.

One resident said people living in the lockdown area could easily walk over the line to a nearby pub.

I wonder if descendants of the civil servants who originally drew borders that bisected tribes and communities in Africa and the Middle East were involved here.

The same thing is happening in Melbourne. The Premier there ordered certain zip codes locked down, which in some cases cuts streets in half. Also, there has been a surge of people trying to change their home address on their driver’s license to escape lockdown lol. The Transport Department there are now reviewing all change requests.

Here’s a graph of what is happening in Victoria. The numbers are still relatively small, but the trend is not:

Other states have all cancelled any plans to reopen borders with Victoria. My state will open to everyone EXCEPT Victoria on the 20th.

US President Donald Trump, long opposed to wearing a face covering in public, says he is “all for masks” and they make him look like the Lone Ranger.

Beat me to it. That’s another automatic entry into Trump’s Hall Of Stupid.

Sorry to say but we need one of these events to result in a full on disaster for the participants.

Yeah I had to roll my beard underneath my mask to get it to fit. I was first in line when barbershops opened to get my beard done right.

I know. It’s even worse watching from the outside when most of your family is inside.

If this is going on during Christmas, I might be spending the holidays alone.

Thank goodness the US govt, CDC and WHO have had such clear messaging about asymptomatic spread!

So, I have some bad news if you’re immunocompromised:

I know it’s not a possibility you want to hear right now, but I spent Christmas in Prague once and it was really something.

It’s more who I’ll be with not where

Anyway I think I don’t have to worry so long as I get a residence permit.

Sure, I know. Was just trying to say it’s not THAT bad. I mean, Christmas is way overrated for a lot of people and presumably you can still get back to see people when the travel restrictions lift.

We don’t seem to be hearing about people getting sick on airplanes, right? Or am I missing these stories?

How would you know? There is no real tracing here and being on an airplane means you were also in the airport, at a hotel and probably engaging in a bunch of other high risk behavior.
