COVID-19: Chapter 10 - Mission Achomlished!

Naomi Klein wrote an entire book based on how much being confused for Wolf messed with her own life…

Got a wedding to attend in a month too.

I mean it’s gonna be a small wedding (immediate family and close friends) but still a gathering.

And I ain’t bailing on it. Bought the plane ticket and everything.

That’s the Czech data. The number of confirmed cases (including reinfections) in the last 7 days per 100,000 inhabitants is 22. In more raw numbers, there were 206 positive tests for COVID in the country yesterday. This day last year, there were over 6,000 positive tests. The population of the country is 10.5 million people. So it’s the population of North Carolina and the size of South Carolina.

Ya I’ve read it. It’s really good. I know Naomi a little. Knew her much better back in the 90s.

Intimately you might say?

(Verse 1)
Well, I’ve known a few women in my time,
With wisdom and grace, they shine so fine,
Over 60, they’re a treasure, that’s for sure,
Each one’s got a story, wanna hear some more?

(Chorus)
Over 60 women whom I know,
They’ve lived their lives, and they’ve let it show,
They’ve seen the world, and they’ve paid their dues,
Over 60 women, they’re the ones I choose.

(Verse 2)
There’s Mary, with her silver hair,
She’s been through joy, she’s been through despair,
She raised a family, worked a nine-to-five,
Over 60, she’s still so alive.

And Sarah, with her laugh lines deep,
She’s got a heart of gold, and her love runs deep,
Over 60, she’s a force to be reckoned with,
In her presence, you can’t help but feel uplifted.

(Chorus)
Over 60 women whom I know,
They’ve lived their lives, and they’ve let it show,
They’ve seen the world, and they’ve paid their dues,
Over 60 women, they’re the ones I choose.

(Bridge)
They’ve weathered storms, and they’ve seen the sun,
Over 60, they’re second to none,
With a lifetime of memories, they stand tall,
Over 60 women, they’ve seen it all.

(Verse 3)
Now Jane, she’s a grandma, proud and true,
Her grandkids adore her, and you would too,
Over 60, she’s got stories to tell,
With a warmth and kindness that casts a spell.

And Betty, still chasing her dreams,
Over 60, she’s not what she seems,
She’s climbing mountains, and she’s breaking molds,
Over 60, she’s as strong as gold.

(Chorus)
Over 60 women whom I know,
They’ve lived their lives, and they’ve let it show,
They’ve seen the world, and they’ve paid their dues,
Over 60 women, they’re the ones I choose.

(Outro)
So here’s to the ladies, over 60 strong,
In their company, I truly belong,
They’ve taught me life’s worth, and they’ve helped me grow,
Over 60 women, I want you to know,
You’re the stars of my life, and I love you so.

And a punk version for fun

(Verse 1)
Hey now, let me tell you 'bout some ladies I’ve seen,
Over 60 and they’re still living the dream,
They don’t take no crap, they’re as tough as nails,
With a rebel spirit and some epic tales.

(Chorus)
Over 60 women whom I know,
They’ll knock you down with a punk rock flow,
They’ve seen it all, and they’re ready to go,
Over 60 women, let the punk rock show!

(Verse 2)
There’s Jenny with her leather and her wild gray hair,
She’s been to every show, and she’s always there,
Over 60, but she’s still in the pit,
With a mosh pit scream that’ll never quit.

And Sally, she’s got tattoos from head to toe,
Over 60, but she’s still in the know,
She’s got an attitude that just won’t quit,
With a punk rock heart, she’s the real deal, legit.

(Chorus)
Over 60 women whom I know,
They’ll knock you down with a punk rock flow,
They’ve seen it all, and they’re ready to go,
Over 60 women, let the punk rock show!

(Bridge)
They don’t care about your rules or your age,
They’re tearing down walls and they’re all the rage,
Over 60, they’re still kicking it hard,
In the punk rock scene, they’re the wild cards.

(Verse 3)
Now Lisa, she’s a rebel with a cause,
Over 60, and she’s breaking all the laws,
She’ll speak her mind, and she’ll never back down,
With a punk rock spirit that wears the crown.

And Betty, she’s been in bands since '82,
Over 60, and she’s still playing true,
She’ll rock the stage like it’s her last night,
With a punk rock fire that’s burning bright.

(Chorus)
Over 60 women whom I know,
They’ll knock you down with a punk rock flow,
They’ve seen it all, and they’re ready to go,
Over 60 women, let the punk rock show!

(Outro)
So here’s to the ladies, over 60 strong,
In the punk rock world, where they truly belong,
They’ve kept the spirit alive, and they’ll never let go,
Over 60 women, punk rock heroes we know!

It was really fucking obvious when the drug got its EUA that this was a possibility; i cbf digging it out on phone but I have a post from two years ago saying so. Kind of mindblowing to me that it was ever approved. It’s not even that effective, significantly worse than Paxlovid.

Now, adding insult to injury, the European Union may end up paying three times less than the US for the same vaccine. According to a report by the Financial Times, EU health authorities are in the process of negotiating a vaccine supply deal with Moderna—and, so far, the discussed price per dose is just 25 euros, or about $26, which Bancel had suggested previously was a discounted price for the US government. Though the EU’s price is not final, the discussed price in the negotiation is substantially lower than what the US is already forking over for the update shots.

Hey we make less money than America. We should pay less.

Picked MAGA stepmom up from the airport yesterday and she complained about the weather and, wait for it…catching a cold. Not that she’d know the difference between a cold and Covid anyway, but she mentioned that one of the idiot POS’s she was visiting was positive for it. She also bragged about refusing to mask up and has this super annoying habit of asking a question, then putting her face close to yours with the dumbest possible look on it to eagerly await your answer. I hate it in the best of times, but went off on her when she did it to me in the car yesterday and told her to get her germy goddamned face out of mine and keep it on the other side of the car. I was not messing around and she seemed a bit shook and hugged the door after that, but still wanted to go out to eat so she could expose more people to her illness. I refused and we got a to-go order instead and I spent the rest of the time leaning away and resisting the urge to bitch her out.

Got very lucky that after Mom, passed, Dad had a late life sane partner. She was like “all these people we know have lost their damn minds”.

Mine lives and breaths Fox World. It’s her truth and nothing will penetrate it. She wanted to argue against F=ma while I was waiting to take her to the airport and I just shut her down with LOLLLLL and asked her who she’s been listening to, because whoever it is is fucked in the head. She was defending her half golf swing and arguing that it was just as capable of generating club head speed as a full swing. She’s also seen my golf swing drastically improve and looks unhappy about it. I think she’s afraid I’m going to stop golfing with her. She tops everything in the fairway because she plays the ball near the outside of her back foot. When I suggest playing it further forward she moves it back even further. Just completely impervious to learning. It’s pretty frustrating.

Yeah I really hope I dont ever enter a stage of “refuses to learn anything about anything”

I had an unexpectedly philosophical talk with my first grader tonight, and one of my theses that came out of it was that life is a perpetual and unwinnable fight against entropy. Life itself is an unimaginably improbable (at least quasi-) violation of entropy, and while that bill will inevitably come due, the best we can do while alive is fight against it, namely by staying alive, and perhaps by producing new life (and picking up our toys and cleaning the dishes). But our bodies and minds will inevitably decay and fail, perhaps asynchronously, and not always in the same order and at the same time for everyone. Thus, I think there is some cause for compassion for those losing the mental fight, even if their losing battle has turned them into incurious hateful fucks. We should all try to do the best we can to fight the decay, but everyone is going to lose, and not everyone is going to lose in the same way. I’m not sure of the political corollaries of this, but it’s worth considering that we don’t all have control over the battles we lose, even fighting as we do.

I have a friend who decided he had learned all he wanted to know some years back. He has no interest in learning how to text on his cell phone, or really how to do anything on his phone. He got a new phone the other day, and I asked him if he had moved everything over from his old phone. He said “there’s nothing to move”.

This is the most foreign concept to me. By far one of the most rewarding things in life is learning. I’m basically insatiable. Can’t imagine a time this would change.

I agree with you 100% of course that learning is a source of pure joy, but I think I know where these people are coming from. Aside from trite observations like “ignorance is bliss”, I think more accurately what is going on is that humans generally have a bad habit of externalizing their problems. People are highly susceptible to narratives that everything bad that is happening to them is due to some outside force that is doing them wrong. If someone gets in the habit of accepting these narratives, they will do it all the time because you can always imagine a villain that is responsible for your pain. Once you’ve gotten into that habit then what you find is that any effort to actually learn a fact runs against those comforting narratives and so you stop trying to learn and rush back to the warm embrace of ignorant lies. I can understand how a person could get trapped there. The complexity of the real world mixed with the harsh reality that one’s own choices and actions contribute to one’s experienced bad outcomes is a damned uncomfortable place to be pyschologically.

The relevance to our politics is obvious. The next Canada election is going to be about one thing and one thing only - conservatives are running on the Big Lie that if you are a Canadian and you have problems, then all those problems are because Justin Trudeau did it to you. Full stop. Take JT out of the equation, and all your problems go away. The US basket of deplorables of Nazis and anti-vaxxers and libertarian incels and evangelists all share one common belief - that the blame for their own personal unhappiness lies entirely with an external force. This doesn’t stop them from preaching about Personal Responsibility, of course, but self contradiction isn’t a problem for them as long as then can hold in their hearts the assurance that their own personal failure are someone else’s fault.

My father, an example to us all, remains endlessly curious. He’s 89 now, and when my kid came out as non-binary he enrolled in a course at Duke about gender. He just became IT chair of his CCRC. Unfortunately I think I got much of my genetic makeup from my mother, but hopefully enough of him remained for me to follow his path.

In case it doesn’t go without saying, he’s a big lefty. Although he is not a Bernie fan - I think the idea that loud angry Jews got the rest of us in trouble was instilled in him very early.

Some people are fascinated by the unknown while others are terrified by it. I don’t get it, and it’s clearly not a healthy way to live but they seem to be out there.
