COVID-19: Chapter 10 - Mission Achomlished!

Idk, I’m just planning on us losing 50 years of life expectancy gains, dying in my 60s, and don’t expect access to healthcare anymore if I get sick.

Nah, we’ll be fine as far as access to healthcare. Anybody lower middle class or under could be fucked though.

We lost what, 1.8 years already based on 2020 alone?

Yes

I feel like this isn’t a huge tragedy.

Heard some stories of doctors having their shifts in the ER involuntarily extended in the San Diego area today on a Twitter space from a verified doctor. Seems bad.

I’m on day 5 of (maybe?) Covid symptoms. Finally feel somewhat normal. Sore throat is gone. Congestion isn’t too bad. Still no energy and an on and off cough. Low grade fever on and off all week. 2x Moderna + Moderna booster FWIW

We just hit 9.5K cases today in OK. We’re obviously well over testing capacity, but I guess I’ll try and get another PCR Monday at a different site. Silly me going to a county health department Tuesday morning and expecting results in a timely manner. Nice to know our public health apparatus is broken at every single level.

I’m pretty sure I had a mild covid case last week but we were out of rapid tests and I wasn’t about to go wait in lines for a PCR test. Do you need test results for work or something like that? Otherwise why not just assume that you have it?

No I’d just like to leave my bedroom. Can’t even see my partner or leave the house lol.

Oh, my daughter was already sick so we just went with the “we are all getting it anyway so why quarantine from each other” strategy. I don’t honestly think quarantine in the same house with omicron is even possible anyway. Shit is mega contagious.

You could sneak out the window?

I only learned recently that boonies/boondocks comes from the Filipino word bundok or mountain.

From when the Americans were massacring civilians in the Philippine mountains circa 1901.

Interesting discussion. One further thing to add is the economic component. I know we (rightly) object to the prioritising of profit over lives and the lol 5 days from the CDC.

Nonetheless, the economy is certainly less able to sustain subsidized lockdowns, cash transfers etc than it was two years ago.

More generally. I’m happy to pay more than my fair share of tax, and it was the right call. But we should all recognize that as younger, relatively well off salary earners. Its us who will be paying for 2020/21 for the rest of our lives.

Well, we’re trying to spare my partner from missing work. She’s the sole crematory operator at the moment and they’re already way backed up.

I don’t think this is true at all, depending on what you mean by “the economy”.

The lack of lockdowns and cash payments is solely because there’s no political will to do so.

Yeah. It was a super generalized statement.

Just aware that the stonks thread seems to have reached consensus that we are in the middle of a catastrophic asset price bubble fueled in part by the pandemic, which is not aligned to whatever consensus we have in this thread.

Question. Is there any evidence that exposure to covid without infection gives any additional immune protection?

I.e. if someone was in the house with covid twice, but somehow dodged infection, would their immune system have been given a boost? Is there any way to tell?

Obviously would be seriously confounded by asymptomatic infections.

I’d assume so. It would be very hard to study that perfectly, so if you’re looking for good evidence, it might be a bit hard to find.
