The way I think about thought is that we’ve all got lenses we see things through. For instance I’m a huge history nerd so I’ve got say a level 5 historian lense, and I’ve got everything but a semester worth of an econ degree so I’ve got a level 4 economist lense… and I’m a legitimately elite freight broker so I’ve got a level 15 freight broker lense.
I think all of us have lenses of various sorts. I think that as the lenses gain level 2 things happen. First the value of the insights we get from looking at something through that lense improves (which is why I use my freight broker lense so often… it’s fucking great) and it starts to take up more and more real estate in our overall world view. Eventually if you specialize enough it becomes pretty hard to see the world through anything but our strongest lense(s). This can create a kind of myopia where you discount others opinions because they are using lenses different than yours. It’s important to note that the lenses themselves have strengths and weakness, things they are really good at seeing and blind spots.
On this board we’ve got doctors, lawyers, business guys, economists, scientists, and other assorted strong lenses. The assortment of views I think is what makes this place so worth the time.
But yeah the strongest content I’m ever going to be able to post here is going to be about business/supply chain/logistics. It’s where I earn my living and it shows. And the closer that content hews to freight brokerage itself the better it’s going to get.
Yeah the build up in Darwin is intense. Too much for me, the wet not quite so bad but only if you don’t mind sweating constantly. Alice is a really dry heat. Alice isn’t for everyone and i know a lot of people who have absolutely hated it but I think I just got lucky and met really nice people and had a great time while I was there. I met my bf and got my first dog as an adult there. She was an absolute star.

Germany infection rate rises to 1.0 as people told to stay home as much as possible
The head of Germany ’s Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases has called on Germans to stay at home as much as possible after new figures showed the coronavirus infection rate had increased.
Lothar Wieler, president of the Robert Koch Institute, said the virus reproduction rate, dubbed ‘R’, is now at 1.0 in Germany, which means one person with the virus infects one other on average. Earlier this month, the rate was at 0.7.
It comes after Germany eased some of its lockdown restrictions last week, allowing retailers with floor space of up to 800 sq metres to reopen, along with car and bicycle dealers, and bookshops.
The only upside of “LIBERATE THE STATES” is that the US may end up providing a clear and unavoidable example to the rest of the world about the dangers of reopening too early before the billionaire propaganda has time to fully take hold over here. If the US going to reopen too early I hope the resurgence is quick enough for a clear lesson that can’t be ignored. Obviously my first wish is for clear and compassionate leadership that puts human lives above the bottom line of billionaires but if that ship has sailed (30 years ago) I hope the warning is loud and clear. Sorry US peeps.
As expected, it’s down to the Communist Party to decide. Eight of the 15 members have to vote for the state of emergency for it to be put in place. Decision probably gonna be made within the next half hour.
They hinted at supporting ANO for this. So, I expect that to be the case.
Thanks for bringing this up. I realized last night we face an unmitigated disaster on this front, potentially.
Because no amount of false bravado and “Everyone just go back to work” is going to counteract the failure of a supply chain that is ideal dir virus spread among required workers.
This is a domino we don’t want to fall and it may be too late.
I’d been wondering about this for a bit. Given the fact that a major benefit of wearing a mask is to limit you spreading your shit to other people, masks with unfiltered outbreath valves are obviously less than optimal.
The guy literally won’t attend briefings. On anything. Even when they try for the two sentence summary, he won’t read it. He won’t be briefed on anything. And on top of all that, he’s exceptionally stupid. It’s almost a perfect storm; the saving grace is he is entirely reactive. Smart Trump would have used the cheat code of total GOP fealty to completely solidify his 2020 “election” standing. Bill Barr is frothing to weaponize the Justice Department. But Captain dipshit can’t think beyond what he’s seeing on Fox News that instant.
Philippe, the French PM, is going through how the country will be opening up from May 11th. I was hoping to post that it seemed pretty good. They’ll monitor case numbers, hospital beds and their ability to trace and test people who came in to contact with infected people, and only open up if those indicators are fine regionally. They will be trying to find and test everyone who came in to contact with infected people, and making infected people isolate completely for two weeks with the option of a provided hotel room to do it in.
But then he got to shops, and everything can open except restaurants & cafés and mask wearing is only recommended. He also, hilariously, said they would make sure social distancing is followed on the metro in Paris by blocking off every other seat and painting lines on the floor. I imagine anyone who’s seen a city metro system (i.e. almost everyone) knows how silly that is, I’d guess there’s seats for less than 20% of the people on the metro in rush hour. Should add that masks are at least obligatory on public transport.
We’ll see how it goes, but I doubt we’ll be changing much. The big decision is mostly whether our kid goes back to day care, but that still seems like an obvious no.
I listened to a clip from a former Trump briefer on youtube and she said Trump would often just blurt out “I don’t agree with that”. She implied it was often a random reaction and without a lot of thought. Like I’m sure when he was told that the arrival of the virus was going to require a response that featured a very robust testing program, he replied “I don’t agree with that”. He said as much the other day after he was told Fauci said we needed to ramp up our testing.
