You make me sad.
Rogan is a symptom, not a cause. Dumb, incurious white dudes are inevitably going to flock to his brand of disaffected stonerbro politics where nothing is taken seriously and no demands are made of you. In my day, we had South Park as an outlet for that.
Itās great shit. Iām not a hater, I got an autographed copy of the book in my collection that I love to show off:
I moved to LA in 2000 when I was still young enough to go to big rave things for NYE. Every dude there was dressed like Tyler Durden.
That was the moment I decided everyone in LA was not a soul-sucking vampire like my 5 years in SF had conditioned me to believe. The E helped.
Alice Springs is a great place to live. Itās fun, beautiful and thereās plenty to do. People are really friendly. You have to weed out the racists but thatās the same anywhere in Australia. I would move back there for sure.
I think that trust in government really started to decline in the 1960s with the Vietnam War and the relative success of the civil rights movement. Everyone had some reason to distrust the government over some highly salient issue. Nixon began to exploit that, but Watergate prevented him from realizing that fully. Reagan continued the strategy. By the 1990s, you had people who had lived their lives completely bombarded from both sides with the message that some part of the establishment was untrustworthy and government has done little to give them a reason to change their mind.
To be clear, Iām not arguing that people are anti-authority because they are racist. I think that some people are racist because that is an easy way to express being anti-authority. But also, some people are anti-authority because they find authority to be an impediment to racism.
Perry just prefers the smell of dollar bills and doesnāt mind traducing helpless shills.
Thatās one reason I love the movie Quiz Show - itās a perfect moment of the slow decline into cynicism in this country. Which is probably inevitable.
I actually think one silver lining of this crisis is people realize truth actually matters a little, and so does looking out for your neighbor. Also rich people realize they kind of need all those essential workers. I donāt think itās going to be a sea change or anything - but the optimist in me hopes we could get a little nudge back into slightly better territory.
Between the lines: Thereās also an enormous human toll taking place at these plants.
- āIt is not going to be easy to get workers six feet apart,ā William Schaffner, a professor of infectious diseases, told the N.Y. Times. āIf you space people out, you reduce productivity.ā
Talk about saying the quiet part loud.
While some think that it is best to wear a mask, some choose not to. We have a right to choose under the constitution. I have several family members who fought for those freedoms, most bled, some died. Many who walk among us fought so we can have freedom. I wear a mask because it is my choice. I also have been gathering with some family because I choose to. I respect authority. I also respect others who gave me freedom. I think those in authority can make suggestions about if we should assemble or not but it is unconstitutional to tell us we cannotā¦or to wear a mask or not. Just the way I was taught.
Did not realize that not having to wear a mask during a pandemic was in the Constitution. Facebook comes through again.
South Park is a smart and unique show that was also a cultural phenomenon and has created many memes still in use. Yeah, the creators are libertarian, wow, no way can art be produced by such people! Iāve seen you trash this show so many times.
The type of mostly shitty show in our day that dumb, incurious white dudes flocked to, at least for the non-jocks among this group, was anime. And Family Guy.
Edit: BOUT TREE FIDDY
Meanwhile I wonder how many of them would approve of laws banning hijab in America?
Thereās actually a history of anti-mask laws in America, a lot of it has to do with banning KKK hoods, but also masks worn to conceal identity during the commission of crimes or in attempts to intimidate.
In any given situation, the courts are going to weigh the public health aspect of it and support a mask mandate in public places. You donāt have to wear a mask, this is Americaā¦ But you also donāt have to step outside your place of residence.
When conservatives talk about their rights they completely ignore whether they are infringing upon other peopleās rights. You have a right to use an assault weapon? What about my right to not be a victim in a mass shooting? You have a right to walk around without a mask in a pandemic? What about my right not to have to deal with the fallout from your reckless behavior?
Right-winger logic basically amounts to - I want to do what I want, and the Constitution guarantees me that right. You donāt get to do what you want, because thatās the law. And youāre a minority.
The anime community has changed quite a bit. I was heavily involved in it when it was more of a niche thing in the late 90s/early 2000s. Back then, fans I knew were either apolitical or left-leaning. That was definitely unique because nearly all of them were from conservative areas of America.
Some of the apolitical types became political when girls started getting into it. Guys werenāt used to that because the fan base in the western world was very male-dominated. So, they responded with creepy behavior and sexist comments. Feminist fans pointed out sexism in anime and those originally apolitical fans defended those shows as not being sexist. Of course, feminist fans are right. Anime is in general gratuitiously sexist. There are entire subgenres dedicated to showing off disproportionate animated women.
Now that anime is more mainstream, there are a lot more casual fans and anime fandom is a more hardcore fanbase passioniate about the genre. So as a whole, anime fans are more representative of the political spectrum while the fandom tends to be pretty polarized.
Lots of corruption being uprooted in response to covid19 in the Czech Republic as of late.
The government has been funneling money to shell corporations for PPE, paying 2 to 3 times the price for things like masks and gloves. I wonder if the PMās friends or the PM himself owns these companies. Taking taxpayer money during a pandemic and funneling it to yourself or friends through shell companies is some Putin-level shit.
ANO (the largest party in the Chamber of Deputies) wants to extend the state of emergency by a month. Basically, they fucked up passing the restrictions which meant most of them got struck down or modified. As a result, the slow release is a much faster one and theyāre claiming that a second outbreak will occur if they donāt get it. Of course, they could have properly passed them after having them struck down but decided not to so that they could blame the courts if the pandemic gets worse here. When asked by minority parties to show evidence, they either donāt have it or have an indequate amount of it. Pretty much theyāre being asked to trust the word of a political party that embezzled money from the government and illegally passed restrictions in order to cover their ass from liability damages in court.
In Czech polititcs, thereās a minority coalition between ANO and the Christian Social Democrats with the Communist Party being the wildcard as theyāve positioned themselves to be fence sitters in nearly every major vote and this one is no exception. In all likelihood, theyāll be the ones deciding what happens to the state of emergency because the other minority parties have declared opposition to a one month state of emergency.
That said, extending the state of emergency for a month would likely be an unpopular decision with people here. Too many people are losing too much money and theyāre getting pissed that they have to stay home despite the progress that has been made against the virus.
TLDR: Fuck ANO. They went from handling this very well to exploiting the pandemic for their own benefit and now most of the rest of the CoD wants to hold them accountable.
Itās still shocking and depressing how corrupt some western governments are now, with electorates resigned to it because they feel thereās little they can do about it.
Wtf. No.
Have only been to Alice Springs once as a teenager but would be very low on my list of places Iād want to move to.
I havenāt lived there since the early 90s but I loved it. Lovely dry climate, beautiful landscape etc. Itās lovely. I also liked Darwin but not as much as Alice.
STRAYAN THREAD TAKEOVER GOGOGO
I have similarly only been to Darwin once, although much more recently, and would be similarly disinclined to move there. I can imagine that possibly Alice Springs has charms that my teenage self would not appreciate. I could definitely not hack the weather in Darwin though, that sort of humidity destroys me. Alice Springs is a bit drier?
