COVID-19 (2): Turns out it's going to be pretty bad actually

Fever is probably a pretty decent indicator from a Bayesian point of view and the only one (cough, shortness of breath, etc) that can actually be objectively measured.

They destroyed their own economy AND the economy of their biggest customer for [reasons unclear]. NO ONE would suspect that! It’s diabolical!

When I talk about the third-way Rogan Bros who only believe youtooobs and never really get deeper other than pointing one possible half-truth and saying “See!” w/o really coming to a conclusion other than we’re all overblowing this thing - these people are exactly who I’m talking about.

I’ve seen that stupid thing a half dozen times on my FB - always with no synopsis or even a caption other than something like “Interesting!” or “Watch this”. I felt the need to share my pain.

O2 saturation can be measured objectively with a pulse oximeter, but there are other reasons why you wouldn’t use that as a screening tool.

Right but is this the fault of Joe Rogan or The Media? Like, say what you will about Joe Rogan but he is being honest with his audience. Always. He may be an idiot, he may be talking about Bigfoot or an asteroid impact 12,000 years ago or how the Moses burning bush was actually a DMT trip, but shit man, he believes what he’s saying. Can Donny Deutsch say the same?

Yeah, that’s true. We had enough trouble getting our union to agree to temperature screenings, pulse o readings would have been a total no go.

I’m not blaming Rogan I’m just using him to define the category.

Most of the guys in the men’s circle thing I went to were like that. They all into ayahuasca, deep heartfelt hugs, dressing kind of hippyish, kambucha, hot yoga, cold showers, bulletproof coffee, whatever the next big bodyhacking thing THEY don’t want you to know about, etc.

At one point they wall wanted to go out and kill a feral hog together and most had never even fired a gun. I was like let’s slow down here guys. They’re the guys you see out in the woods beating on their war drums and getting in touch with their inner wildman - clothing optional.

They talk a TON about toxic masculinity. I figured they’d mostly be die-hard liberals.

Nope - a few were liberal, a bunch were apolitical and a couple were freaking Trump/Jordan Peterson fans.

All they know is they don’t believe ANYTHING from the MSM or govt. Which to be honest I can sympathize with. It takes a lot of work to know when our govt is lying to us and when they’re not, and when the media is sensationalizing something for eyeballs vs. I should really panic RIGHT NOW.

They’re going to bodyhack, meditate and soundbath their way to wellness. They’re completely unplugged from science, math, or any of that annoying stuff that tethers you to the real world (not all but a lot of them).

Oh yeah and they always talk about “holding space” for each other. Which is probably the only thing that kind of got on my nerves - except the Jordan Peterson guy. He sucked - he was so freaking depressed all the time. He drove off me and the only other non-ayhuasca connection.

Obviously these guys are on the far hippyish end of the Rogan Bro spectrum. But the defining characteristic is “No way bro, I do my own research on youtube.”

No, it was an independent contractor, not a Wal-Mart employee. I asked. I don’t believe he was with Instacart, just freelancing for Wal-Mart.* He drove his own car and had what looked like his daughter with him to help. Neither were wearing masks, but hopefully that was just because they took them off in the car. I met him at the garage, though we stayed at least 6-feet apart.

*When I looked up info about tipping on the Wal-Mart website, it said that employees don’t accept tips, but freelancers do. That’s why I asked him, as the app did not give me the option to tip until AFTER the delivery was made. Since he said he was independent, I tipped him personally, not knowing I would have the option in the app later.

Right. So this distrust of authority, that’s my whole point. Jordan Peterson is a reaction to that. This has been building for a long time. Like, a very long time, they made a movie about it more than 20 years ago.

Goddammit - can I blame Fight Club for all this?

Yeah all that stuff is well and good except when it leads you to start posting on FB that covid is just like the flu, mannnnn. Then we have a problem.

Again - it’s not like deplorables. They’re gone. I have empathy for most of these guys. They’re generally good people. They just don’t understand how science works. And I do blame Rogan for that some. I know it’s fun to speculate about Bigfoot being real. But FFS like 50 million people hinge on your every word. Do some responsible digging. Listen to experts.

I want to put Rogan through my general physics class in college. The world never looked the same to me after that. The curtain had been pulled back for good.

I mean what I’m saying is that Fight Club isn’t a cause. It’s an observation. Chuck Palahniuk didn’t start a movement, he reported on one.

Right - agreed. It’s also 100x smarter about the real world than the third-way guys I’m talking about.

Fight Club is one of those books where it’s not even clear if the author knew he was writing satire. So many Gen-X RoganBro dudes grew up loving Tyler Durden because he’s such a badass primal alpha male… it’s like the people who read The Great Gatsby and revel in how rich and cool Gatsby was.Maybe every generation has a defining work that sails over the heads of its greatest fans.

I mean, of course the brilliant novel and the brilliant movie is 100x smarter than the idiot RoganBros are. Like is Chuck Palhniuk smarter than Jared Leto? Is David Fincher smarter than Meat Loaf? Yeah man, much smarter. Like by a lot.

But the movie doesn’t sit in judgement of Meat Loaf, or Jared Leto, or Holt McWhateverHisNameIs. And it shouldn’t. So what’s causing the systemic distrust of authority and institutions? How did those authorities and institutions fuck up so badly that now no one trusts them? And has that minor societal issue been addressed in the 25 years since that novel has been written? Or has it gotten worse?

Ok you’ve convinced me it’s like 90% Rogan’s fault.

Did you actually read Fight Club? It isn’t parody but it is very clearly a satire.

The Ikea stuff is my favorite part, and the Pixies at the end.

Next you’re going to tell me American Psycho isn’t a horror movie. GTFO

American Psycho…is also a satire?
