COVID-19 (2): Turns out it's going to be pretty bad actually

Harvard (endowment: $41 billion) is cutting jobs and pay. Lol ever giving money to Harvard.

Sounds promising but if the best treatment we have ends up being a biologic rather than a small molecule it will likely be much more difficult for the Pharma company to scale up production to meet global demand as they are usually much more difficult to manufacture

Are they still not refunding any part of tuition or room and board for the last semester? These fucking people.

Iā€™m not sure if this is the right place for this, but I think this is the thread where we had a few posts about farms destroying produce in the fields.

I know a couple posters here are from Florida, so this might be useful to spread through your social networks. This site tracks farms in Florida that are trying to sell direct to consumers because of supply chain interruptions:

How else are the Kushners of the world gonna bribe their way into a university?

Hereā€™s my issue with people using their judgement: people are morons. I do believe Iā€™m capable of determining when a mask is necessary or helpful, but I donā€™t trust other people to do the same. I think running maskless is OK, my neighbor might think that a quick trip to Trader Joeā€™s is also fine. I havenā€™t heard anything about how wearing a face covering might be harmful to me, but if there is information along those lines Iā€™d be interested to see it. So, in conclusion, everybody wear masks when they leave their homes.

The masks are only effective at stopping up to 3.6 roentgens. Not great, not terrible.

Also if youā€™re not wearing a mask right now youā€™re a mark. They lied to you to save masks for doctors. Itā€™s not that complicated.

But if Bill Gates paid the entire $400-500 million the US usually gives the WHO heā€™d only have $103.6 billion left to donate to his foundation.

itā€™s not just the money that matters with international organizations. Political buyin and collaboration are equally important. It matters if the US drops out and not just because of the money.

Itā€™s the same with the Paris Accord, UN, WTO etc.

I just googled and twitter searched around and I donā€™t see anything official on adjusting to IHME just wildly fluctuating predictions.

Liberty students are suing for risking their health and not refunding spring tuition and fees. I hope a guillotine is part of the terms they want.

Nah. They get what they deserve for going there in the first place.

Ok, so dumb question at this point: what masks have you all found to be good for personal, errand-running use and where did you get them?

I happen to have an N95 mask I bought years ago, so I used that last time I went grocery shopping. My wife has only left the house to do a couple things that didnā€™t require leaving the car, so she didnā€™t wear a mask. My kids havenā€™t gone anywhere. I assume, though, that weā€™ll all need one at some point.

We have no sewing skills. Could possibly use hot glue, I guess. Could also make the t-shirt/rubberband mask that the Surgeon General demonstrated.

Iā€™ve seen some on Amazon, but they are mostly a) not thick enough, from reading reviews, b) disposable, or c) have dumb cat mouths on them.

The ones I have all required sewing Iā€™m afraid. To give my mum something to do I linked her a bunch of masks on youtube and sheā€™s been spitting them out like nobodyā€™s business. She sent me like 10 prototypes. Best one so far is an adapted verson of this with behind the head ties rather than earloops:

Itā€™s a proper snug fit. I bought a bunch of HEPA Vacuum cleaner bags to use as insertable filters. I have no idea if itā€™s that much use but it constantly keeps me aware of taking precautions if Iā€™m out and about.

I made one out of an old T-shirt based on directions that (I think) were posted on here. Itā€™s not pretty, but it seems functional and requires no sewing: lzUMVe2

ETA: Iā€™m getting pretty fucking annoyed with auto-correct constantly ā€œcorrectingā€ Proper words with improper ones, e.g. ā€œwereā€ to ā€œweā€™reā€. Fucking worthless function.

Thatā€™s pretty ingenious - I like it.

Started with old dusk masks and stapled on some fabric.

Then MIL got us some nicer dust masks. Had a rotation system so we did re-use after several days.

Now my daughter sent us some nice cloth masks she made. My sons company contracted her to make a few dozen (company does store inventory counts).

Even have a pocket between the two layers if you want to insert some type of filtration membrane. Launder between uses.

Iā€™m guessing you are on IOS? Itā€™s autocorrect feature is awful. Insanely bad. Like 1994 bad. It literally makes everyone appear more illiterate than they really are.

I donā€™t understand why they donā€™t fix it.
