COVID-19 (2): Turns out it's going to be pretty bad actually

Yep (I only browse from my phone). If anything, it seems like it has gotten worse over the years.

There is information that air flow diffuses the virus quickly. My judgement is informed almost entirely by this. Basically that means Iā€™ll wear a face covering when shopping to benefit others, not myself, but if Iā€™m going to a sparsely occupied outdoor space Iā€™d rather breathe fresh air. I also think going out for a run is insane, mask or not, unless you can run on a private/effectively private route.

Lol ya I notice me that. Iā€™m typing on my phone right now. Lol

Think it was from the previous locked thread, but lol at the dumb motherfuckers that thought the French scientist was anything other than a charlatan:

Jesus christ. This is going to get lost in all of the noise but whatever.

Buy ten masks for each member of your family. Real ones. Do not sew your own. N95. The expensive ones with the exit hole for moisture are the Rolls Royce option but the regular ones are fine. For the adults the solid cup ones are more comfortable but they are susceptible to dents/dirt so the folding ones are probably better for reckless children.

First off - stay home so you donā€™t need to wear anything. If you donā€™t, cycle through 7-8 masks. Wear one a day if you absolutely have to go out. Reserve one mask for a big cleanup job and reserve one clean mask for a special occasion when you absolutely need a fresh one. Learn how to disinfect them with heat but recognize that the science is still out as to whether that works and that theyā€™re meant to be disposable. Buy a pair of goggles for big cleanups/doctorā€™s visits.

Even on the black market 50 masks shouldnā€™t cost you more than a couple hundred bucks. The time to have done this is two months ago. The second best time to do this is right now.

Hopefully we get real data on this issue soon.

Masks work collectively.

We are not wearing masks when walking the dogs. Sidewalks are not crowded at all. Everyone is crossing the street or stepping well to the side to let other pass. Avoid walking directly behind others.

He looks just like that doctor who said Trump is the healthiest man alive. What is it with medical crackpots and that look?

Isnā€™t it impossible to find those masks? I canā€™t find them anywhere.

This seems like a more thorough thread explaining the problem.

Cliffs: the formula that the IHME model uses restricts it to symmetrical graphs on a state by state level. So if it took 3 weeks for deaths to increase from zero to their peak in Minnesota, IHME will predict 3 weeks to go from peak to zero deaths again. That obviously ignores that there are different factors influencing the increase in deaths vs the decrease in deaths.

Sounds to me like IHME is completely useless once weā€™re on the downward side of the curve.

My cityā€™s city council has officially ordered that all people must wear masks at all times outside their homes.

A few of my neighbors have some thoughts

NY State is going to require masks starting at 8 tonight apparently.

Whole Foods, every day.

Apparently those blue paper mechanic shop rags are 95% effective as particle masks (according to an article my sis-in-law told me about that I couldnā€™t find with a quick search). Iā€™ve been using those wrapped around a dust mask (since my dust mask isnā€™t N95).

I do have a 3M half-mask respirator and an unopened pair of P100 filters for it (from long before covid), but I think that would be overkill for grocery shopping. Iā€™ll probably use it when live poker reopens somewhere. (Iā€™d rather be laughed at than die of boredom playing online poker.)

Someone posted a link in this thread or the last covid thread showing different materials to use as filters in home made masks and the blue paper shop towels were one of the better items you could use that you might have lying around

Arenā€™t you in Canada? The best masks were readily available online (i.e. walmart.ca) until several governments recanted their lies on the subject a couple of weeks ago. At this point theyā€™re easier to get on the grey market, which has infinite PPE available from hoarding resellers. People self-policed themselves from buying 5 masks while sociopaths sold hundreds of thousands of units over Whatsapp. Do you know any drug dealers to ask?

The folding style n95s are still readily available online.

Edit: After a minute of searching for Clovis I found a 20 pack of full n95 cup masks for a gouging rate of $160 CAD.

My sister tested negative. So sheā€™s a nurse thatā€™s been self quartantined for the past two weeks over nothing because the testing is a joke. Youā€™d think sheā€™d be a priority but nah.

Also be on the lookout for R95/P95 masks. These offer the same level of particle filtering as N95s, but also filter out oil particles. I was able to find some of these on ebay right after the hoarding began, and even after the ebay ban was implemented.

I wear my R95s with a sun mask/ gait over the top. Picked up a northface camo gait and also a patagonia camo gait so that I can rotate them out. Also allows me to take off the R95s without digital physical contact.

Have to register but not pay to read.

Basics- total deaths are a little less than double normal+covid in Spain and little less than 3x in Italy. (By my eyeball at the charts).

Need this for US but what Iā€™ve found so far is all over the map (specifically looked for GA and FL where shenanigans are expected).
