COVID-19 (2): Turns out it's going to be pretty bad actually

And it might be more like 83% for herd immunity if the R0 is really 5 something.

Growing outbreak at a meat plant in colaradoā€¦ Canā€™t find a link!

Got my theories on why many Americans are having trouble handling this. It was a post for Facebook but ended up getting too long. This is merely the view of one who hasnā€™t lived in the country full-time since 2010 (unless you count a summer in 2013). Take it however you like.

While purely anecdotal, I see/read/hear so many reports and stories about people throughout America not taking this seriously (especially in rural and suburban areas). I have my theories:

  1. Not knowing suffering - Most people in America simply donā€™t know what itā€™s like to truly suffer. I donā€™t and most people I know donā€™t either. You go east of the Iron Curtain, people know suffering. You look at the number of refugees throughout Europe, they know suffering. America hasnā€™t had war on their land since the 19th century. The last real pandemic in America was over 100 years ago. Only one bomb has been dropped by a foreign power on our territory.

  2. American exceptionalism - Tied into the first one, there have been pandemics throughout the world that have been reported on by the media but have never affected us much. This creates an air of arrogance and invincibility. That we donā€™t have these problems because weā€™re better than those other countries. Even the most leftist of politicians push that message continuously. Speaking of politiciansā€¦

  3. Poor leadership - From the federal to local level, elected officials have been incredibly slow to respond to coronavirus and many have been ineffective when doing so. Whether itā€™s arrogance, incompetence or something more insidious, policymakers have failed at every level. As late as the end of February, this was promoted as a hoax perpetuated to bring down the federal adminstration despite the WHO telling countries to prepare for containment on January 30th. Some state governors and local politicians followed suit by continuing to deny the impact this was having. Others acted a bit faster but did not have the resources to contain this. People look to leaders for clear, honest messaging in a crisis that tells people what to do and why to do it and that was not provided. Response to a pandemic needs to involve universal compliance to slow the spread. With mixed messaging from leaders, that did not happen.

  4. Live free or die - We grow up being told that America is the freest country in the world and that we should value that freedom more than anything. Every morning as children, we would pledge allegiance to a flag that we were told symbolized that freedom. Live Free or Die is actually the motto of New Hampshire. Itā€™s clear that people take that to an extreme. That changing oneā€™s lifestyle in any way in response to a threat is a way that the threat (i.e. terrorism) ā€œwinsā€. ā€œThe terrorists winā€ was todayā€™s equivalent of a meme while coping with post-9/11 life. That mentality persists to this day.

  5. Invisible enemy - People respond more aggressively when stimuli can be sensed. If one could see the virus infecting people, observe it coursing through oneā€™s body, and see exactly how it affects it rather than just symptoms, the response would be more sensible. For example, few people viewed the invasion of our privacy as a problem because you cannot sense its loss.

Interesting site - 440 clinical trials with COVID-19 in the name. You can filter by status. Most are still recruiting.

More anecdotal evidence that the Philippines is fucked.

My partner now knows of 3 people who have died from this.

Her aunts doctor. Friends dad. Friends neighbour.

All a little distance removed, but strongly suggests that the country is being hit hard.

I suggest thatā€™s probably also a fair representation of how other poor countries are doing. You donā€™t have the infrastructure to measure this, you canā€™t report it properly.

I assume none of them got tested or is there any way to know if they did or didnā€™t make it to the official death toll?

Lol Chiefsplanet brought the cartoon to life.

[youtoob excised because fuck that shit]

Cliff notes:

Bill Gates and his foundation along w/big pharma are trying to keep us away from vitamins and only push for his cure.

This ā€œcureā€ will be to inject us all with his biological weapon that can both track our whereabouts and get into our blood stream.

Fauci and Brix work FOR Gates!

Their constant dismissal of simple, cheap cures are thrown aside in lieu of expensive drugs.

Thereā€™s lots more in thereā€¦have a look.

No. HNH told me that the lady doctor who goes on stage with Trump says we are counting every single death,

Seriously though, if they dump all the past NY at home deaths now it will cause a huge panic everywhere. The number is substantial and it will crush all those glimmers of optimism who think we are almost done with this.

Got to wait until at least mid next week to make sure they are really dead,

To be clear what he was was trying to say last night Iā€™m pretty sure is that they were counting all deaths as covid, he was trying to say that she admitted they were inflating the deaths but but did a poor job getting that across

I have seen places try to use it, but the original implemented technology was often not compatible with the technology that came.

So places had built in units but they didnā€™t necessarily work as we much more slowly migrated to chip and pin.

One time I had a McDonaldā€™s employee hold an entire portable card thing out the window for me to tap. I havenā€™t been to many fast food drive thrus in the last few years though, so I may be out of touch. I know the sonic drive ins are the car hop places have a card reader in the menu.

Also I feel like a lot of fast food places had app ordering so you could pay in the app, but I think all those required going inside. Seems like the perfect time to make the app payment in the drive thru a thing.

Honestly any long term changes we make to limit stranger to stranger physical contact will be beneficial going forward. It will help with spread of future diseases, Covid 19, the flu and whatever else.

So uh it seems like its time to do that. The panic is coming period.

Move that next thread title have Big 'Rona somewhere in it in honor of rsigley.

In bullshit stats news that donā€™t matter but damnnnnnnnn we did over 2k deaths confirmed today. Definitely getting pretty tired of winning.

Lol. Any time a person throws up a YouTube video as proof of their position (not just proof but explanation as well) you know you have a live loon.

And then they complain that you clearly didnā€™t watch EVERY SINGLE MINUTE OF IT.

I especially like when the video still that pops up is some combo of a chaotic city background, a cartoony virus, and some random jackass in a t-shirt - with silly eye-catching font. Then you know the science is rock-solid.

I agree but I feel like a collective push towards optimism where every crumb is being pounced on.

Most people do not want to be in lockdown obviously. Our business overlords donā€™t want us in lockdown and neither do THEIR public servants. So there is a tremendous amount of pressure to get this back on track as soon as possible and it worries me.

The only thing I am thankful for right now is Trumpā€™s handling of this has been so incompetent he has no control at all and canā€™t just push everything to go back. He lost that power a while ago.

My personal feeling is check with me in two weeks and I think we will have a better idea where we are really at on the progression spectrum. If we had successfully pushed testing and tracing we might be able to have gotten lower hit areas back online shortly.

However based on recently published recovery studies, the US could need as many as 22 million Covid 19 tests A DAY to successfully manage a return as everyone would need to be regularly tested. I donā€™t see 5 million tests a day, or even 1 million tests a day on the horizon yet.

I am scared, I just think a lot of people are becoming less scared, and taking things for granted.
