COVID-19 (2): Turns out it's going to be pretty bad actually

Do you have to wear a mask while running or playing tennis?

#1 by tomorrow. Got some extra long rolling papers to celebrate properly.

Next to no one is actually observing social distancing/mask wearing here in the Upstate of SC

Yeah, I had a 10% tip set on an order of $405, but I was ordering extra stuff cause I expected like 20% to be out of stock. The order ended up being $335, and he gave me a rotten mango (literally sunken in and leaking), but I didnā€™t complain about it or even note it and rounded him up to a $40 tip anyway. Other than that he did a great job, and Iā€™m not going to sweat it right now. All told he spent about 90 minutes from start to delivery and probably made $50-55 depending on what Instacart gave him. I feel okay about that, and the combination of tipping almost 2.5 times the normal rate, being very friendly and appreciative, arranging for a cart to be waiting for him at the door to my building, and letting the mango slide I think is fair enough in the circumstances.

Ultimately I paid $417 for an order that probably would have cost me like $290 if I went and got it myself. I wish he was getting the lionā€™s share of the difference, but a 44% premium on groceries is pretty huge.

Thatā€™s a great point, too.

Yeah like Iā€™m currently doing fine, but I suspect that wonā€™t last forever and then itā€™s a matter of duration of the crisis. If I knew that Iā€™d be doing my own shopping and be back to normal with my income in 3 months, I could really hook these people up. If it goes on for 12 months Iā€™m okay. Longer than that, it could set back my earning for 2+ years. I expect that my main game could be iffy for months once we reopen. Hell, thereā€™s a chance thereā€™s no live poker for over a year and a long drawn out recession leaves me grinding out a living at 1/3 or somethingā€¦

So I donā€™t want to just splurge too much on tips because Iā€™m flush now, I want to be able to sustain this for a while if I have to, and reemerge still able to make my living. Weā€™ll see what happens.

As of this past Tuesday, people can hike, run, and cycle without a mask so long as people maintain a 2 meter distance from each other.

With tennis, itā€™s assumed that people must wear a mask since it hasnā€™t been mentioned and no more than 2 people can be on the court at any given time.

Here are the rest of the restrictions that have been eased

Our local liqour store has been delivering. We have made a couple orders and tip $20 (when we order not cash) for them to come and drop it on the porch. Seems fairly safe since they work at the store and probably arenā€™t getting screwed by some app on their tips.

That being said I totally get why people are doing Instacart(even though we arenā€™t doing it so far we have done 2 huge grocery runs instead) and frankly those delivery people would likely be making 0 otherwise

Most of the cities are - where all the population density is.

Yeah until a group of masked robbers arrive and it turns into a hostage situation and the police canā€™t tell anyone apart. Then you have to suffer long accusatory interviews with Denzel Washington.

I live in OKC and have family in Dallas, Houston, KC, Wichita to name a few. From my personal experiences and what I am hearing things are nowhere near a ā€œlockdownā€. My water heater went out 2 weeks ago and I had to go to Home Depot a couple times because of the water damage. It was drastically more busy than usual with zero people doing anything or wearing masks, etc.

I know you are from KC so maybe you can contradict what I am saying but from what I hear that is basically everywhere in flyover country. A real Italy style lockdown is nothing like what I am experiencing here.

Yeah, very little is actually locked down anywhere. People can still do most of what they want with zero effective restricitons, and many of them are.

I believe thatā€™s what triggered Johnny yesterday. He finally ventured out into the world and realized that tens of millions of people were barely changing their behavior at all.

I honestly think we are so conceited here that we think doing a bottom 5% developed nation response because we are ā€œexceptionalā€ is going to get the job done. And that goes from Trump to most state and local leaders down to the people who live here. Its fucked up.

And gain our rightful spot as USA #1.

LA traffic at rush hour is like 2am traffic.

KC is pretty well locked down right now. Schools done for the rest of the year.

Even in LA a grocery store is busy with few people wearing masks (unless that new order just went out) - guessing Home Depot isnā€™t much better.

I think the olds in this country have a death wish/really believe that Live Free or Die bullshit and the youngs are only willing to do so much if they donā€™t have comorbidities.

What the hell, Sweden?

Thatā€™s about as off brand as possible.

Schools are done everywhere. Im just saying traffic and people being out at stores here in OKC is up if anything not down since this started the few times I have ventured out. And all the anecdotal evidence I hear is similar. I have no doubt LA is taking it more seriously but we donā€™t even have public golf courses closedā€¦
